Absolutely.
You can have American citizenship and not even know it. It can start to cost you money if you aren’t careful.
I know someone who lived all of their life in Canada. Realizing they had been born in the USA got a USA passport. They never filed US income tax, and now it’s likely to cost them several thousand dollars to get rid of the US Citizenship, there’s a lot of paperwork, and they may owe some money to the IRS. Until it finally gets resolved, they are now very nervous about travelling to the USA.
I know another person who was also born in the USA and lived all of their life in Canada. At the age of 18 they went into the US Consulate in Toronto and immediately filled out forms to get rid of it. It didn’t cost that person anything.
