My barely three year old son was sleeping with me in the middle of the night in my dark bedroom. He needed to use the bathroom and asked if he could turn on the light. I said "sure". His little voice said, "I'm going to put my hand over your eyes so the light doesn't hurt them". Then his tiny left hand covered my eyes as he reached above me to pull the long chain on the wall sconce in our very old house.

I'd never done that to him. My heart still melts that he thought to make such a gracious gesture on his own at 2:00 a.m. as a three year old needing to pee.
