In the 90s when I was working in a large DIY home store, one of the checkout operators had a customer who wanted to complain to the store management, so I was called over. She explained that she had bought a pine bunk bed from us, and that after only a few weeks it had broken and was no good. I was a bit surprised, as the few problems we’d experienced with these beds had usually been that a few of the pinewood slats (which supported the mattress) had cracked or were missing. They weren’t top quality, but for the price they seemed fit for their purpose. (They were self assembly) I led her over to our display model and asked her to point out the parts that had broken. She said that all of the mattress support slats had broken, and that her poor boy had fallen through, although fortunately he hadn’t been injured. I asked her how big her boy was, as these beds were not full size, and were only supposed to be for children. (They were about 5′9″ long, and had a shorter and thinner mattress than usual) She said that her boy wasn’t a big lad, and that I could see him, as he was in the shop. She called him, and from around the corner appeared a hulking brute of a man, around 6′3″ and probably about 18 stones heavy. I couldn’t believe it! Luckily he seemed to be quiet and timid, and perhaps embarrassed about the situation, as I explained to his mother that the bed was not designed to support an adult, and that I couldn’t refund her money under the circumstances. (God knows how he had managed to fit in the bed, anyway) She didn’t get angry and argumentative, (as I had been expecting) and just walked away with her “boy”.
