While I'm sure that the costs incurred in every state are similar, North Carolina recently published the details of what it costs that state to execute someone via Lethal Injection. Here is a basic run down of their costs…
60cc syringe. They buy 12 at a time for 40 cents each. These are the syringes used to actually inject the killing drugs into the condemned, plus between each drug they use these to flush the tubing with a saline solution. That assures everyone involved that the entire dosage of each drug is in the condemned before starting the next drug. Total: $4.80
10cc syringe. They buy 6 of these at 12 cents each. I suspect they use this immediately after placing the IV, to flush the needle with saline, and to make sure they got the IV into the vein, instead of a muscle or skin. Total: $.72
IV tubing x 3. Total: $1.89
IV needle x 3. Total: $20.61
IV stopcock. This is a device used to connect 3 IV tubes together. It also has a little valve on it to control flow thru the tubing. They get 12 of these. Total: $14.76
Saline solution. 3 x 1000ml Total: $2.13
Thiopental sodium. It's the drug they use to render the condemned unconscious. 125ml. Total: $34.25
Pancuronium bromide, (Pavulon). This is the drug that paralyzes all the muscles in your body, including your diaphragm. This stops the breathing. 50 meq/10ml Total: $7.75
Potassium chloride. This drug stops the heart. 20gm/100ml $81.12
Medical doctor. He/she is there to officially pronounce the condemed, dead. The Dr does nothing at all prior to the death. Their Hippocratic oath precludes them from helping in any way to carry out the execution. They pay him from his drive there til he drives home @ $85 per hour. Total: $340.00
Although this isnt listed, I bet that most states pay the actual executioner for their services. I can find nothing about this online, so let's simply assume they pay them around…Total: $100.00
Medical assistant. This guy places the IVs into the condemned, and checks between each injection to make sure the drug has taken effect before they inject the next drug. Bad things can happen if a) a drug hasnt taken effect before the following drug is injected, and b) it can burn like an unholy bitch if any of the execution drugs are mixed together in the IV. Hence the checking for effect, and the flushing with saline between injections. 4 hrs. Total: $100.00
So there ya have it. According to my calculations, even tho there are likely a few other nickels n dimes spent along the way that I haven't accounted for, based roughly upon what it costs in NC, it costs a state around $708.03 to kill a person with a lethal injection.
