An amazing thing happened in my state last week, it sounds very funny but a serious issue in our country.

All of us might have heard of organic farming and using natural fertilizers. Our State govt decided to took it one step further.

They are now buying cow dung from the rural areas at the price of ₹ 2/kg. Later it might be used for bio Gas and manure production.

It solves two more problems in rural areas, stray cows in the street are now being domesticated as now there is some value in keeping them and returning some money so farmers as they are unemployed most of the year.

Some people might call this silly but stillif implemented nicely then it can lead to great profit to govt as well as to the farmers.

As demand of organic food is increasing day by day, so it can help in encouraging many people towards organic farming.

Wwe have 2 seasons in Chicago, Illinois. Winter, and road construction.

During mild years summers hit 90F, and winters dip to 0F, or slightly below.

In 2013, we had a not mild year. Air temperatures were 100+F, with heat indexes in the 110–115 range. That winter, weeks on end of -5, -10 air temperatures, with wind chills in the minus 50’s F.

Very flat terrain, which makes Illinois, in the more rural areas ideal for farming. Corn and soybeans are big crops. 85% of the population lives in Cook and its surrounding “collar counties”, and since nobody knows about them, you always tell people your from Chicago, or “around Chicago”

Excellent Art Museum, Museum of Natural history (home on “Sue”, the famous T-Rex fossil. Lovely aquarium, decent planetarium, adjacent to Lake Michigan, 2 zoos. A pro American football team, NHL hockey team, 2 baseball theams, whose fans are divide by where they live largely. North of Chicago, a Cubs Fan, South a White Sox fan (notorious for score fixing in a World Series in the early part of the century.

The state, in terms of communities of interest (what sports teams you follow, TV you watch, papaers you read….why I am I telling a sociologist about communities of interest) are largely divided. People in the south of the state, associate themselves more with St. Louis, Missouri, those in the north with Chicago.

Most people who are not American still associate Chicago with Al Capone in the 20’s (I worked with a lot of Swedish people from Ericsson, who were curious if we were still driving around Machine gunning each other. Also, notorious for its remarkably corrupt political and judicial system, the subject of not one but 2 major FBI stings in the 80’s.

1. Alaska is geographically the largest state in the United States. Measuring from north to south the state is approximately 1,400 miles long and measuring from east to west, it is 2,700 miles wide. 2. Alaska was first settled by Russian fur traders. Russia claimed Alaska as a possession and established the city of Sitka as it’s Russian capital. Russia sold Alaska to the Americans in 1867. Alaska remained a territory of the United States until it became the 49th State in 1959.
3. 17 of the highest mountain peaks are in Alaska. Mt.Denali (formerly called Mt.McKinley) is 20,320 feet above sea level, Mt. Denali, located in Alaska's interior, is the highest point in North America. The Alaska range is the largest mountain range, running from the Alaska Peninsula to the Yukon Territory. 7. Alaska is home to 229 Federally Recognized Indian Tribes, referred to as Alaska Native Tribes. Alaska has the greatest number of Native American Indian tribes in the United States. However, other tribes in the lower 48 states have more members. They are treated differently than other tribes in the United States. I’m from New Jersey, born in Dover right down the road from Morristown and raised in Middletown about a mile from Sandy Hook Bay and five miles from the Atlantic Ocean. I’ve grown to appreciate many things about my home state over the years.

A Wild Garden: For such a small state, Jersey has a great deal of geographic diversity. The northern half of the state was once covered by the Wisconsin Glacier and is strewn with boulders from the terminal moraine. The southern half, where I’m from, is rock free but you can find fossilized seashells and shark teeth from 70 million years ago. New Jersey has some of the best sandy beaches on the east coast and was once the premier getaway for elites from New York, Philadelphia and Washington. Seven different US presidents visited Long Branch while in office during the 19th and early 20th centuries (James A. Garfield died there). New Jersey’s nickname is the Garden State for a reason: we’ve got apple orchards, cornfields, pumpkin patches and horse farms. Then there’s the Pine Barrens, home of the legendary New Jersey Devil. New Jersey is, of course, notorious for the urban corridor separating New York from Philly. This strip of urban blight, lined with oil storage tanks, polluted wetlands, and Giants Stadium, is featured prominently in the opening credits from the Sopranos. It may be ugly but we’re proud of it all: industry, traffic, organized crime, and phenomenal Italian cuisine.

Cosmopolitan from the Start: A common misconception about the Tristate Area is that the region only became culturally diverse with the waves of immigration at the turn of the century that made New York the biggest city in the world. New Jersey (like New York) was diverse from the beginning. The Lenape were the original inhabitants, of course. In school were learned about their long houses, how they farmed the “three sisters” and hunted game and gathered shellfish. Kings Highway, running through the heart of old Middletown, was named for King Charles II in the 1600s but followed the old Lenape path leading from the forest highlands to the ocean.

When Europeans started to arrive, the peerless natural harbor of modern day New York drew in explorers, merchants and conquerors from the beginning. In 1524, Giovanni da Verrazano, an Italian exploring the coasts of the New World for France, sailed the length of the Jersey Shore and into the lower bay, very close to where I grew up. In 1609 Henry Hudson, an English captain sailing for the Dutch East India Company, traced much the same route and even anchored just offshore of Atlantic Highlands, about a mile from the house where I grew up. The Dutch would go on to establish the first European settlements in New Jersey in places still known for Dutch names like Hoboken as well as renamed or defunct locations in Bergen, Hudson and Burlington Counties.

Unlike the colonies in New England founded by the Puritans or Catholic Maryland or Quaker Pennsylvania, New Netherland was a business venture where religious freedom was tolerated by order of the Dutch East India Company. This was made explicit when the company reprimanded Peter Stuyvesant for trying to exclude Jews. Anyone from anywhere of any faith could come as long as they were willing to work hard, the directors told him. Thus the first Jewish congregation in North America was founded in New Amsterdam in 1654. The history of African Americans in the region goes back even further, to the tragic arrival of the first African slaves in 1626. When the British took over in the 1660s, in exchange for a peaceful surrender, the new overlords evicted none of the inhabitants and accepted the mercantile, cosmopolitan nature of the former Dutch Colonies. New York and New Jersey have been that way ever since.

Thus, part of growing up in New Jersey is sharing classes and sports fields with kids with English, German, Irish, Italian, Polish, Russian, African, Chinese and even Arab names. A few of us may have had a little Mayflower or Dutch stock (my mother’s family first came in 1815) but we all had some family come through Ellis Island, Castle Island or Philadelphia during the big immigration waves, too (my Italian ancestors arrived in 1906). We grew up connoisseurs of a dozen different cuisines. As everyone knows, New Jersey has some of the best pizza and bagels on the planet. Thanks to my Polish best friend, however, I became a lifelong lover of kielbasa and pierogies. My Jewish friends introduced me to the delights of knishes and latkes. My Hungarian one-time girlfriend knew where to score excellent goulash and chicken paprikash. Later in life, after my wife and I came back from Istanbul where we lived and worked for three years, we were grateful for the many Turkish restaurants we had never noticed before.

Crossroads of the American Revolution: Sandwiched between the two largest cities in the 13 colonies, positioned at the southern edge of New York Harbor and guarding the mouths of the Hudson and Delaware rivers, New Jersey was in the thick of the revolution. So much so that more armed clashes occurred in New Jersey than any other of the original 13 colonies. Jersey was the setting for many of the war’s most dramatic moments, none more so than Washington’s crossing of the Delaware at McConkey’s Ferry on Christmas Night, 1776 and surprise attack on the Hessians at Trenton. The Continental Army followed up with a successful defense of their position at the Battle of Assunpink Creek and an attack on the British rear guard at Trenton. What is less well known, however, is the horror visited on the people of New Jersey during the British advance that chased the Americans across the Delaware in the first place. George McCullough’s 1776 details how the bounty of New Jersey’s farms and industries enticed the British and Hessian regulars into an indiscriminate orgy of destruction, plunder and rape along the roads from Newark to Trenton.

History nut though I am, I only recently got around to reading 1776. What it brought home to me (and the reason I’m even writing this) is how much the geography of the war intersects with places of significance from my own life. The British line of march that year passes through New Brunswick, home of Rutgers University, where I went to college. The Americans fought rear guard actions through the town to hold the British back while Continentals burned the bridge over the Raritan (located where the present route 27 crosses into Piscataway. The fighting passed up Albany Street, right past the future location of the restaurant where I had my first date with my future wife. Farther down 27, still on the line of British attack, I survived my first and only car accident—just northeast of Princeton.

After the Battles of Trenton and Princeton, Washington and his army would spend three winters in New Jersey, keeping watch in the British in possession of New York. Two of those winters were spent in Morristown, down the street from my wife’s childhood home of Brookside. The drive to visit her would take me past Jockey Hollow, where Continental regulars overwintered—and many died—in 1779–80—the worst winter of the war. Not far from Jockey Hollow is the site of the small in where, back in 1776, a detachment of British cavalry (tipped off by a local Tory) captured General Charles Lee in his dressing gown. The inn was located in the town of Basking Ridge, where my wife and I got married (in a converted grain house that predates the Revolution).

In 1777 Washington’s possession of the high ground in New Jersey forced the British to attack Philadelphia by water. Though the attack succeeded, Congress was able to escape. Forced to abandon the city by land in 1778, Sir Henry Clinton led his forces across Central New Jersey toward New York Harbor. At Monmouth Courthouse, Washington’s army pounced. The Battle of Monmouth would be one of the bloodiest battles of the war. Fought on one of the hottest days of the year, it also produced hundreds of heatstroke casualties—among them Aaron Burr, a New Jersey native and Princeton alumnus. Though a draw, the battle featured two legendary moments: 1) Washington on horseback personally leading a charge on the British lines and 2) the apocryphal tale of Molly Pitcher, wife of an American artillery officer who brought pitchers of water to cool down the cannons and who helped man the cannons when her husband was struck down.

Growing up in Monmouth County, I often encountered reminders of the clash. Molly Pitcher is our historical legend and as such has given her name to various and sundry businesses, including the Molly Pitcher Inn—the poshest hotel in Red Bank. Monmouth Battlefield State Park, straddling the border of Freehold and Manalapan, also hosts a high school cross country race each fall—a race I won the second year it was held, setting a short-lived course record with a time just under 18 minutes. The paths of American and British forces in the aftermath of the battle can be traced along a series of historical markers (denoting campsites of each army) leading through my home town, passing within a mile of my house on the way to Sandy Hook, from whence the British were evacuated by boat up the narrows back to New York.

The Sandy Hook Lighthouse, incidentally, is the oldest continuously operating in the United States. Local Patriots removed its works early in the revolution to make the approach to New York more treacherous. The British, however, repaired the lighthouse and guarded it for the remainder of the war. The British campsite on Sandy Hook thus became a magnet for Monmouth County Loyalists seeking refuge.

The U.S. is waiting for a Hail Mary pass by a Democratic Party with the capacity, enthusiasm and persistence to save the world.

The undercurrent of tension is thick and stifling. The socio-political frustration over healthcare, climate change, diversity and the dangers of conflict within and outside our borders is pitted against zealous outrage over taxes, regulation, social change and security issues.

Social norms are being tested as the constitutional government has become the plaything of the wealthiest Americans, who are not simply the oligarchs who rule a once-proud republic, but have positioned themselves as the captains of what is now a global market state.

For humanity, the economy may be fragile, but the wealth and power of the American 1% has never been more secure. Their dominance over the U.S. and humanity is growing stronger. The threat they pose to life on this planet has never been more extreme or serious, because their wealth is tied to fossil fuels, cattle and other environmental problems.

The United States of America is the eye of the storm. People go on with life, because so much of that life has been locked down in the marketplace of commerce, the bureaucracy of governmental institutions and a socio-cultural unity that defies politics at every level. We are not united by race, ethnicity, religion or class. The American people find and create our own brand of freedom wherever we are. You will know us by our spirit, which transcends our limits and makes us strong.

There are core beliefs that are holding us together as the financiers decide what puppets to install in what is now no longer public office. What we have here in the states is the private system of a corporate military culture. Every position in government, including the intelligence gatherers, investigators, Congress and the president, governors and mayors…everyone…is subject to the will of those who own and control a global market state.

Recognizing this reality, surviving the changes and asserting a right to a democratic government is overwhelming the American way of life. It is distracting anyone with an understanding of how our American 1% affects nations, regions and the planet as a whole. It is stressful and frightening.

We struggle with the challenge and hope for a miracle.

Dominated by their financial backers, the political parties are operating as a single two-headed monster, confronting the people of our nation and the people of the world. They represent American political center-right. This monster is daring the left everywhere to find a way through this time of challenge, and fighting like a devil in hell to prevent life-saving change in the racist, classist status quo.

Trump may be irritating, but the majority of Republicans are spoiling for a fight. Without the Trump circus as a buffer, the ignorant right threatens to push a weary world into a confrontation that nobody wants. If Trump were to be removed from office and his successors and supporters dare to provoke the majority of Americans and the nations of the world (who are decidedly left of center on climate, health, diversity and security), there will be trouble with a capital “T”.

We are waiting for that “still, small voice” to be heard over the raucous noise of false advertising that rips through the minds of our many victims. We are waiting for a way to organize an effective political action plan that

understands the American need for democracy and compassion,

the need to be free of oppressive interference,

to be untarnished by corruption,

to be respectful of an authority that exposes the inviolable truth by which we understand the world,

to remain loyal to our own nation in the face of fear-inducing challenge,

and to simply care about the well-being of those we love.

My neighbor is one. All his life, even his parents have been lending money. That is their primary source of income.

The parents are old and gnarled now, but they still stand between the hedge of their boundary wall to lure my village people into buying loans from them on daily, weekly or monthly basis.

Call them the local small scale ‘Blade’ - the colloquial term for loan sharks who charge double/tripple the bank interest rates. But the best part is that people are still willing to borrow money from them without any kind of security or written agreements.

I am not sure how it works, but they make it.

The fact is, they come under the non-working category and they embezzle so much of the tax money doing what they do for a living.

In earlier days, it was a pretty common thing to do. ‘Blade’ money lenders were everywhere when I was little. Then government started strict scanning for such guys and they all seemed to go out of business or atleast from the light.

This still happens everywhere. In my place, atleast they are not using henchmen to recover the money is what is good about this family.

They are pretty rich in assets and they seem to be pretty popular among my village acquaintances.

Honestly, if you ask, I would not report him or his family, neither would they be caught in the act; they are safe players or something.

We all just know that it is plain illegal and everybody knows it.

Times are good in Texas. The economy is strong in most areas. The oil market downturn of the last few years was tough on West Texas, but maybe not quite as devastating as busts have been in the past. Houston was less affected by the oil market downturn and really showed what a strong, diversified economy it has now. Central Texas (New Braunfels, San Marcos, Kyle, Buda) is growing rapidly and turning the San Antonio-Austin corrridor into one big city. The tech scene is booming in Austin, and the city is being flooded with millennial techies from out of state that choose Austin over Denver or Silicon Valley. Dallas-Fort Worth continues to grow and has a good job market for new grads.

Overall, Texas is a great place to live right now. Jobs are plentiful. Cost of living is low. The economy is diverse and strong. It's an international state with a diverse group of people but still maintains the southern hospitality and Texan pride that it's known for.

Depends a lot on who you ask and what group you're in.

For many they're getting back to their lives now that the fight is effectively over. They did their civic duty and whether they supported Trump or Biden the election is now practically over with what little remains being out of their hands. As a result many people are in a state of metaphorical decompression as the stress of the last few months is alleviated. For those in this group they're just relaxing a bit because whatever comes next is not their problem for the moment.

Meanwhile for others though this is the time to quietly bury the last four years. A lot of people did a lot of things that are very socially unacceptable things in modern America because someone in a position of power was doing the same thing. Generally people with unpopular opinions, particularly bigotries, become bolder when someone with power expresses the same opinion leading to a surge in overt expressions of the same thing. Unfortuantely the four years of Trump where the sitting president had their collective backs did not lead to a longterm social change in the direction they wanted and the old norm of bigotry and being an asshole in public being unacceptable appears to be reasserting itself as he leaves. As such many have to try to obfuscate how they've been behaving in order to avoid being ostracized for it.

Still others are taking this time as the metaphorical calm before the storm. This applies to people on both sides as well given the animosity that's been on display as well as the overt threats of violence if the pro-Trump side didn't get there way. Many are currently waiting to see if those threats will come to fruition and for that matter just how bad it'll get if the feared violence comes to pass. Others are terrified of what Biden will do having wholly bought into any number of conspiracies ranging from liberals having secret satanic murder cults to celebrity cannibalism and all manner of other weirdness. Some are currently stocking up convinced that the liberals are coming to take their guns away.

So in short we have a mix of people finally relaxing after a very stressful election season and an undercurrent of tension as we all wait to see what if anything will happen next.

It’s late September (Sept 24, 2022) so farmers in Ohio are making sure their equipment is ready for harvest season to begin, people are starting to check their houses for winter durability, and students are heading back to school. Most of the rest of the state is casually dismissing the lowering temperatures, the cloudiness, and the oncoming feeling that seasons are about to change with the knowledge that within about 3 weeks the first snow might be flying (we had snow flurries often during the Fairfield County Fair which occurs the 2nd week of October).

Everything is natural and ecstatic here in Bangalore. The governance is quite. The newspapers for the past couple of days, seem to have run out of exciting stories. Media is not able to create that much hype as to make us tune on the TV sets every hour. The soap opera serials are very old and only new ones, when they come, could make it a little more exciting. The weather is dull, windy, cloudy, cold and perfect to cuddle into a blanket and spend time with either a novel at hand or some hot spicy bajjis.
