Step 1: Brush the grass

Use a broom or a plastic rake to brush the grass (do not use a metal rake as this can
damage your turf) – so you maintain the springy, fresh grass effect. If something heavy has
left marks in the grass, you may have to brush against the grain to give it a spruced-up
appearance. Start in one corner of your garden and work your way across one side, then
tackle the entire lawn in strips – just as you would if you were mowing it.

Step 2: Get rid of the leaves
Use a leaf blower to get rid of leaves and debris. Blow all debris towards one corner so it’s
easier to collect in one go – you could collect it by hand or use a dustpan and brush. Do this
regularly to help prevent weed growth in the turf.

Step 3: Remove weeds
Moss and weed killing should take place as required. Use a water-based moss and weed
killer agent that has a maximum pH balance of 8. When the weeds and moss have died off,
make sure you remove them along with any loose leaves and debris.

Step 4: Fill in turf with sand
Scatter silica sand across your turf. Then take your broom and brush the sand in, evenly
distributing it over the entire area of your lawn. Take care to ensure there is no excess sand
in certain areas and once done, leave for one to two hours before walking on it.

In detail: removing spills and stains from artificial grass

Whether it’s mustard from a barbecue hotdog or a spilled drink, spills and stains will happen,
whatever precautions you take. But you can deal with them effectively by following some
simple steps to overcoming these common challenges:

Spilled your beer or blackcurrant juice? Grab a paper towel and dab it, rather than rub it
into the grass. This should remove all trace of the spill – but if you want to be sure, rinse it
with some water.

Spotted a coffee or ice cream stain that’s been there a while? In a bucket, mix a
teaspoon of detergent with a pint of water. Take the bucket to the stain and use a sponge or
soft cloth to rub it onto the stain until it’s removed. Then, use a water hose to rinse away the
detergent.

Tricky pet stains to remove? Fill a bucket with lukewarm water and mix with a teaspoon of
washing up liquid. Rinse the affected area straight away to clean the stain. Then, hose the
area down using a water hose to remove remaining odours and wash away the detergent.

Got a sticky residue too tough for water? Stubborn stains can be tricky to get rid of. Use
a toothbrush to gently brush away the remaining stains.
