The legend says Lord Vishnu in the avatar of Lord Venkateshwara (popularly known as Lord Balaji) wanted to marry Princess Padmavathi, who was the daughter of the King of Seven Hills of Tirumala. The King, Padmavathi’s father asked for a huge bridal price. To pay for his wedding, So Venkateswara decided to borrow that amount from Lord Kubera. Kubera is considered to be a treasurer as per Hindu mythology.
The tenure of the loan was supposed to be 1000 years(One Yuga). The amount borrowed by Lord Venkateswara was 1.4 million Ramamudra coins. The literature says, as per the loan agreement, Lord Venkateswara is supposed to pay back the loan till the end of this Yuga with the help of his devotees.
Now you know, why so many devotees donate huge amounts to the Tirupati Tirumala temple every year. This story of Kubera & Venkateswara is probably the most successful lender-borrower relationship in the history of mankind.
Moral of the story:
Even if your spouse is a Lord/Goddess of wealth, you may still come under the burden of debt if the terms of borrowing are not favorable. It is ok to borrow, but always have a backup repayment plan. In the case of Lord Balaji, He enjoyed his popularity in the circle of his devotees who would never let their deity become a defaulter. :)
