It’s draft was prepared by drafting committee. Committee was constituted on 29 Aug 1947 and Dr. B. R. Ambedkar was appointed the chairman. It had one chairman and 6 other members. A constitutional adviser was also appointed.
The committee chairman and members members were:
- Dr B. R. Ambedkar - Chairman
- K M Munshi (Ex- Home Minister, Bombay)
- Alladi Krishnaswamy Iyer (Ex- Advocate General, Madras State)
- N Gopalaswami Ayengar (Ex-Prime Minister, J&K, member of Nehru Cabinet)
- B L Mitter (Ex-Advocate General, India)
- Md. Saadullah (Ex- Chief Minister of Assam, Muslim League member)
- D P Khaitan (lawyer).
Sir Benegal Narsing Rau was appinted as the constitutional advisor who later became First Indian Judge in International Court of Justice in 1950.
Some of the committee members were replaced also due to various reasons:
- B L Mitter resigned from the committee. He was replaced by Madhav Rao (Legal Advisor of Maharaja of Vadodara).
- D P Khaitan passed away and was replaced by T T Krishnamachari.
The constituent assembly had long debates about the provisions and after several modifications it finally completed after 2 years 11 months and 17 days. Initially it had 22 parts, 395 articles and 8 schedules. Some provisions came into effect on 26th Nov 1949 and others on 26 Jan 1950.
