Yes- it will.

I just wrote an answer here about the fall of the Roman Republic detailing the characters and broad motivations.

How does this tie into the fall of America though?

Well in summary my Roman content is this

  1. 2 brothers named the Gracchi brothers created populism in Rome and showed everyone how to exploit it. A political conflict between the conservatives and populists is born
  2. A populist general named Marius reforms the Roman military and starts a Civil War against the leading conservative Sulla. Sulla wins the war and “purges” Rome of its populists
  3. Marius’s nephew, Julius Caesar, becomes Consul (President) and leader of the Populists. There is another Civil War between the Populists led by Caesar and the Conservatives led by Cicero.

So Rome formed 2 political factions and these factions hated each other intensely. People began to follow demagogues more and ideas and this led to further conflict.

When demagogues were squared off it meant Civil War. These men, while leading their respective political factions (populist or conservative) would fight and these fights would escalate into all our war between the factions.

Does any of this sound familiar? I am betting it does. 2 political parties that hate each other that are dictated by whatever man/woman is leading them at the time.

If it came out tomorrow that Trump was planning to sell nuclear secrets would his followers care? Even if the evidence was beyond dispute they’d call it a media lie and move on. These are dangerous times.

Now you may ask- what was the outcome of those Roman Civil Wars? Who won the Populists or Consevraitves? Well- neither won.

When Caesar died his power passed to Octavian and Octavian killed the Republic by making himself Emperor for life.

Now Romans LOVED their system. They loved Republicanism far more than modern Americans love Democracy today. By the time Octavian came to power though NOBODY loved Republicanism anymore. Republicanism meant violence, death, civil war, and instability.

Octavian was able to make himself Emperor because everyone wanted him to be Emperor.
