Well, it’s undoubtedly good to have. It’s valuable but has a big price. Although, its value it’s not a must have and it’s not always worth it.

If you are young “early twenties to younger” and your circumstances allow you to get a bachelor degree then go for it. If you are in your middle 20s or older or if you will have to dept a lot of money for the college, or you will have to destroy your social life as you need to work and study at the same time, then I don’t recommend going for the bachelor degree. Instead, I recommend certifications which are also very valuable but costs much less.

The cost I mean isn’t just money, but also many years of studying. As those years you could get some certifications then start working and getting experience.

Experience is considered much more valuable than certifications and certificates.

Two points worth mentioning:

  • For some jobs in some companies, a bachelor degree is a must.
  • Some colleges allow students to transfer there certifications and experience into credit hours. Basically, this means you can get a Bachelor in less than 4 years “sometimes only a few months” if you have many respectful certifications and good experience.

IT Certifications That Can Do Double Duty for Higher Ed

If you don’t know how to start a career in cybersecurity, I recommend reading the related question part at the bottom of this answer as I don’t want to make this answer any longer. But I can mention briefly some points.

Here is the list of certifications I recommend:

  1. CompTIA A+ (skip if you can fix simple computer SW and HW issues)
  2. CompTIA Network (skip if you know computer networking fundamentals and basics)
  3. CompTIA Security+ (Don’t skip unless you took some IT security classes or have experience working in such role)

After getting these fundamentals certifications you should find yourself an entry-level job, then you need to pick a particular track. For example, for network security engineer:

  1. CCNA Routing and Switching
  2. CCNP Routing and Switching
  3. CCNA Security
  4. CCNP Security

For a cloud security job, you can go for AWS certification. I recommend starting with the AWS solution architect associate certification.

For CompTIA, Cisco and AWS study materials, check AlphaPrep.net. AlphaPrep is Cisco, CompTIA, and Pearson partner. So it’s guaranteed that every product is up to date, legit and as high quality as you can get. Another reason for picking AlphaPrep is the study bundles that can save you a lot of money.
