As an automotive designer, I can answer this with a little experience. AutoDesk is a major supplier to Automotive companies in terms of product design. Virtually every automotive brand uses their AutoDesk Alias software for designing the exterior surface of vehicles, otherwise known as class-A surface modelling. Around half a century ago, car designers were using metal or wood strips of flat splines held by weights on a drawing board to draw curves but technology has helped to bring about software such as Alias which uses mathematical equations to generate curves called as Non-Uniform Rational B-splines (NURBs). These NURBs in Alias can be sculpted to absolutely any shape and form imaginable in 3D space along with a surface. In Alias, we analyse the quality of the surface by observing the surface under a light sources to check for the smoothness as this helps us to create a “class-A” surface. If you are a master at using AutoDesk Alias, guaranteed that there is a huge demand for such designers at Automotive companies and their suppliers where the pay is usually in six figures.
