This happened while I was at Apple. We went home one evening — I don't believe it was even a Friday — and the "icon garden" was there; when we came in the following morning, it was gone, nothing but little bare circles in the grass where the pieces had been mounted.

I cornered Steve at a beer bash shortly after that to ask whether he was responsible for the overnight disappearance, since up to that point, it was pretty much a mystery to people what had happened.

He admitted he'd had it done, he found them "too pixellated", and that they were at that point sitting in a warehouse over in Santa Clara.

"Why?" he asked me. "Do you want to buy them?"
