My little brother and I went to a gas station to get some snacks. Due to puberty he is now taller than me. The person at the register chided my little brother because he wasn’t paying for his “girlfriend” (ME).

FIRST OF ALL women can pay for themselves, and their boyfriends if they want to, it’s 2018 people women are allowed to have jobs now.

SECOND OF ALL we weren’t doing anything even remotely affectionate! We’re siblings! No hugging or hand holding or anything. The gas station attendant had no reason to think we were dating. Even if we weren’t siblings we could have been friends.

I was baffled and shocked and appalled. It’s not a very serious encounter but it’s infuriating to be thought of as an object to be taken care of even as the older sister - it’s my job to take care of him not the other way around! I was seriously miffed, it was so unexpected. Women can’t even get their little brothers a snack without being subjected to ridiculous sexist assumptions.
