  • Discussion. Interpret your findings here, explain what they mean. Dwell on how the results helped to answer your research question, address the main hypothesis. It is meticulous because of the intensive research that comes with it, but if you look at the big picture, a research paper needs a few basic tips to be less challenging for struggling individuals. Here are a few useful tips you should follow to improve your academic writing skills.

Step 1: Gather Supplies

To track your success, you will need some supplies: a clear jar or dish and at least 35 small, inexpensive objects like paper clips, pennies, or marbles. If possible, keep these supplies in the location you will be writing.

Step 2: Develop Your Opening Routine

All successful habits start with a trigger. When building a habit from scratch, your trigger needs to take 2 minutes or less. If you make it more complicated, you will likely abandon the whole routine after a few days.

Your trigger will be the actions you will begin to associate with a writing session.

Your Opening Routine should be a set of extremely easy tasks that take you from not writing to writing in under 2 minutes. Here is an opening routine:

  • Close all browsers and silence your phone.
  • Open project document.
  • Open tracking spreadsheet.
  • Type in the date, and start time.
  • Set actionable session goals. Note: If you are starting a daily writing habit from zero, you should also be able to accomplish your actionable goal in 2 minutes or less. For the first week, I recommend actionable goals such as “Write one sentence about X.” The point is not to make progress on your project per se. Rather, it’s to build the foundational habit of your daily writing practice. Start extremely small.
  • Start writing

Step 3: Schedule Your First Writing Session

Choose a time and place today or tomorrow for your first writing session.

Remember that you are establishing a habit that you would like to become routine and that you will later be writing for longer.

For me, this is first thing in the morning. So, pick a time during your peak–when you are most alert and focused. If possible, choose a place conducive to writing for 30-minute periods since you hope to expand your sessions someday.

Step 4: Run Your Routine

Now, it’s time to execute your writing session routine and take the first steps to become a daily writer. Gather your supplies and get ready.

  1. At your committed time, start your Opening Routine. If you start on time, place a paper clip in the jar (if it is in your writing space). You earned one point toward completing your book, as far removed as that might seem!
  2. Complete your Opening Routine. As soon as you do so, place a paper clip in the jar.
  3. Complete your 2-minute session goal (like writing one sentence). As soon as you do so, place another paper clip in the jar.
  4. Schedule your next writing session using Step 3.

That’s it! You’re now someone who keeps your writing appointments. You have a daily writing habit. You’re putting “reps” (just like you would in the gym) toward your book.

Write when you feel like your heart is too tiny to hold the gigantic fibres of grief . Tie your grief to your words and throw it off to a pond . A pond that creates endless ripples of consentment . Let your tears travel inside the deep arteries of your heart and fill in the deep voids in it .

Don't shed tears for something , rather use those emotions to instill a change in others lives . Keep the tissues away and hold your pen , save your tears till the seashore of your page . Write like the smooth tides of the sea. Give them the light and all that it needs . Pour all the reasons of your pain on a piece of paper . Pour it like you pour wine . Little by little ,minute by minute ;until you finish the entire bottle of sadness .

Trust me, words intoxicate more than wine . Wear your heart on the sleeve of your words and don't let the shadow of fear cast away your calm . Tears aren't a solution to your problem . Write until your cheeks face a drought for your tears . Don't drench your pillow with tears, for he's not born to drink your tears . He draws breath to carress your hair and give you infinite dreams . Actually let the pillow do what it does best- GIVE YOU THE AMAAZING HAIRSTYLE .

Scare away your tears and guide them back to where they belong . Your cheeks can't hold an umbrella, don't pour a heavy rain . Drench the pages of your diary with ink . Your thoughts are hungry , don't let them flow out of the Window of your eyes , rather puke those words out. Write till the tears forget your face , write till the writing doesn't forget your identity. Cry , but dont shed your tears , shed your grief .

Write so that someone who is going through trouble, realises that what is bad today maybe good tomorrow.

Academic writing is basically writing that has had all its creativity, life, emotion, and feeling sucked out of it. All that’s left is the husks of hollow words that once held emotive meaning. Think of a normal paragraph as a living human being. Then think of the academically acceptable version of that paragraph as a dehydrated, shriveled up corpse. Mind-rendingly restrictive in how you can express your thoughts and ideas, and just boring to both read and write, most people are not a fan of academic writing and how rigidly it’s enforced by institutions of higher learning.

Provide enough detail so that a well-informed reader could reproduce your study. Make clear what results you are expecting (assays, statistical modelling, relevant outputs) which would answer the research question that you have posed. An easy way to fail here is to provide a list of things you did without explaining why you did it!

What are your results? Present your results in a way that clearly matches the research question that you set out at the beginning of the paper. Were there any shortcomings in your methods? Did any questions that remain unanswered? Did your results throw up any new questions? The way to fail here is to ask a research question…and then not answer it, or (even worse) answer a different question!

Try to get hold of as many of the books on it as you can before you start, so that you have them all easily to hand, and can refer back to things you’ve read and compare them with other perspectives. Plan the order in which you’re going to work through them and try to allocate a specific amount of time to each of them; this ensures that you allow enough time to do each of them justice and that focus yourself on making the most of your time with each one.

Ask a librarian

Library computer databases can be confusing things, and can add an extra layer of stress and complexity to your research if you’re not used to using them. The librarian is there for a reason, so don’t be afraid to go and ask if you’re not sure where to find a particular book on your reading list.

Taking notes

As you work through your reading, take notes as you go along rather than hoping you’ll remember everything you’ve read.

Research every side of the argument

Never rely too heavily on one resource without referring to other possible opinions; it’s bad academic practice. You need to be able to give a balanced argument in an essay, and that means researching a range of perspectives on whatever problem you’re tackling. Keep a note of the different arguments, along with the evidence in support of or against each one, ready to be deployed into an essay structure that works logically through each one.

Keep a dictionary by your side

You could completely misunderstand a point you read if you don’t know what one important word in the sentence means. For that reason, it’s a good idea to keep a dictionary by your side at all times as you conduct your research.

Start formulating your own opinion

As you work through reading these different points of view, think carefully about what you’ve read and note your own response to different opinions. Get into the habit of questioning sources and make sure you’re not just repeating someone else’s opinion without challenging it.

Look out for footnotes

In an academic publication, whether that’s a book or a journal article, footnotes are a great place to look for further ideas for publications that might yield useful information. Plenty can be hidden away in footnotes, and if a writer is disparaging or supporting the ideas of another academic, you could look up the text in question so that you can include their opinion too, and whether or not you agree with them, for extra brownie points.

Also, this notion enables students to feel more involved in their learning, increases their involvement in classes and better connects them to the content material.

Teaching Practices

Many teaching strategies and classroom exercises being applied in education have been proved valid through research. According to a 2012 article published in the journal "American Educator," the earlier teachers start incorporating research papers into their curriculum and/or requiring students to read more research articles, the quicker students will begin to understand the connection between their classroom activities and course content, along with enhancing their literacy knowledge. This idea also provides teachers the opportunity to slowly introduce their students to research formats such as the American Psychological Association writing style. Through this process, students can begin to learn how to properly identify and cite reputable sources in their own writing.

This is to make sure that everything that I write , is my own idea or my own interpretation of an idea already proposed. If I happen to be reading papers while writing my own, there’s some chance that my writing may reflect the understanding of the authors that I am reading and that’s something not very cool.
2. I write as much and only as much as my mind allows at a time. So I may write a few sentences in a day or may be three pages. If I feel I am struggling with the right words or ideas, I quit writing and try to do something else. This helps me maintain the quality of my writing.
3. Before I begin writing my paper, I always jot down the paper outline over a piece of paper, i.e how I’d like the paper to flow. I enlist what figures or tables need to be included and what results need to be discussed. I always title my paper before I start writing it (its a personal choice).
4. We all have some words that we tend to use a lot in technical writing. I have identified some words that I use very often in my papers and i try to replace them with their synonyms as much as i can.
5. I edit (as in format) my results in Matlab, draw my figures in MS Visio, manage references through Zotero (and Jabref) and write in latex. Sometimes I may also use MS Paint to merge figures. Always ensure that your figures are of good resolution.
6. I read and re-read my entire paper (or at least the current section ) after writing every paragraph so as to ensure that the paper transitions smoothly and remains comprehensive throughout.

I got an A+, and it (a typed research essay with at least 3 sources, 1200–1500 words, MLA or APA formatting, etc) was the final assignment. We could do it on whatever we wanted, which was awesome.

But first, a caveat: every scientist and their dog has their own, sometimes conflicting, methods for effectively preparing a manuscript for publication. The trick is to identify which processes will work for you and which will work against you. Specific elements may need to be shifted around depending upon the material you are preparing for publication. For example: you may realize upon finalizing a draft that an additional analysis would really augment your study or that your proposed application requires additional literature review to be added to the introduction, etc. My point is that while rules for writing are great, you will inevitably justify breaking them often (probably with every paper you write).

Further it is important that you don’t entirely compartmentalize experimenting and writing. Writing helps guide your experiments every bit as much as experiments guide your writing. Let me tell you about 15 steps in my process:

Hypothesize

Coming up with a research question you are equipped to tackle is half the challenge of doing research. It needs to be concise, focused, valuable, feasible, and relevant.

1st Literature Review - Hypothesis

Perhaps the research question you just came up with has been asked and answered before. You should consult the literature to see who worked on this particular problem, when, and what solution they used. It is entirely likely that their solution was only partial, though it will be critical that you understand how and what may have been missing from the prior study.

Refine Hypothesis

Based on what you find you may need to refine your earlier research hypothesis. It may be entirely unsuitable or may just need to be focused a little bit. That is why you read the literature.

2nd Literature Review - Methods

Now that you have a concise and valuable hypothesis, you should figure out what approach you will take to find an answer. You may already have a viable method but it wouldn’t hurt to see if there are better ones out there for answering your specific question.

Design/Execute Experiments

This is the part we typically call research. If you have done this right many of the later steps will be much easier.

3rd Literature Review - Refine Context for Results

You got results, but now you should figure out if they are going to add anything to the field. While negative results are definitely important, the audience for these types of papers is not the same as for earth-shattering discoveries. You should use this literature review to find the right audience for your results.

Prepare Results Figures and Write Long Captions

Now that you know your audience you should make figures and captions that are specifically tailored to potential readers. These figures are (up for debate) the most important part of your paper to a reader. After preparing figures, prepare long captions to explain them to readers. These may not be the captions that actually go into the final manuscript but they will be an enormously useful tool when you eventually start drafting the paper.

Outline

A good outline will help you to see flaws in your earlier work and it will save you a tremendous amount of time when you are actually trying to draft the manuscript. You will be more likely to create a draft with adequate logical flow, internal consistency, and readable structure.

Draft Methods

This one is usually really easy. You already selected a methodology, designed the experiments, and performed the analysis—you just need to explain it all in human language. If you can point to another paper to explain something complex, do it.

Draft Introduction

Personally, I find this to be one of the most pleasurable sections to write. That being said, it will likely be rewritten several times before a manuscript is accepted for publication. My first draft of this section is usually written blind, meaning that I sit down and write it all in on...
