1. Most of the people study on the last night before the exam.

2. Many IITians drink and smoke a lot.

3. Few of the first day companies offer packages of 7-8 lakhs too.

4. Most of us are single contrary to popular belief.

5. Some of the students are better singer, instrumentalists, dancer, player, actor, data analyst, manager, consultant, finance freak than the trained professionals.

6. IITians too fail in subjects very often.

7. Many private colleges have better infrastructure and mess food than IITs.

8. Many of us are better at arts and we came here just because our parents wanted.

9. Connection with seniors and officials matter a lot along with CV in internships.

10. Most of us talk more about movies, TV series, football, cricket, politics etc. rather than engineering and technology.

11. Majority of us like to show off that we are IITians, in first year. The number of such people decreases exponentially on being senior.

12. Some students from non CS departments are better coders than CS students.

13. Most of the teachers are below average. They give us a feel like we are not studying in an IIT.

14. Most of the classes see less than 50% attendance for whole year.

15. Many of us go for CAT & UPSC just because our parents want us to do so.

16. A very few of us are interested in research or hardcore technology stuffs. Most of us believe that research sector doesn't pay well.

17. On our birthdays, we try to hide to escape from GPL. Alas! There is no escaping.

18. No matter how much we keep talking about the IITian girls being ugly, deep within we realise that there are very very gorgeous ladies also out there in the campus.

19. If I have a CG of 9+ and my friend has a CG of 9-, many a times the reason behind this is the mood swings of laboratory instructors and tutorial teachers.

20. The guy who never attended any class and whom you taught just the night before exam can score more marks than you.

21. Most of us play, hangout and having food at canteens around 1–2 am in night.

22. I got to know the data of packages of students and I must say that average package is almost half of what other people hope to be.

23. Seniors play bigger role in most of our lives than professors. Be it tips for scoring good marks, guidance for career, internship opportunities, CV building etc. it's seniors who help us a lot.

24. Seniors here strictly don't like to be called “Bhaiya” and “Sir”.

25. If a person is getting 100 likes within first hour on his/her DP, it necessarily doesn't mean that picture is good. It happens because of being IITian also.

26. If you find someone wearing IIT's T Shirt then either that was the only cleaned cloth he had or he is single! (Mostly applicable for first years especially when they are in hometown)

27. Most of our learnings come from seniors and internet via video tutorials, PDFs and DOCs.

28. Library remains like a haunted place except one week before exams and during the exams. Generally library closes at 11:45 pm and opens at 7 am. But one week before the exam and during exam time, it remains open for 24 hours. (Administration too knows when do we actually study)

29. We love politics. You can find hell lot of politics going on during Gymkhana elections and all sort of things happen which are expected in general parliamentary elections.

30. If you are good at nothing, still you will end up being good at something! The adrenaline for winning the general championship makes you voluntarily to do something or seniors may induce that thing in you in some cases.

31. I found students keeping their notes tangled on the front of their bicycle and reading them on their way to exam hall while bicycling.

1. 1. AVERAGE STARTING SALARY PACKAGE IS NOT 30–40 LAKHS PER ANNUM, IT’S MUCH MUCH LOWER: Yes, there are a few who have over a crore as their first salary but the average (excluding the extremely high and extremely low salaries - yes, that’s the statistically correct way to find the average) is pretty normal. I passed out in 2005 from IIT Delhi and while there were students placed at 50 lakhs package, do you know what the average salary was - 4 lakhs only! My starting salary was 3.3 lakhs which after 6 months on switching the company became 4.2 lakhs. After 3.5 years in the 2nd company, it went to about 10 lakhs (that too including bonus). I’m that average you want to know about! Now after 10 years, the average of the starting salaries might have come up to 8–9 lakhs or so.
2. MOST IITians FEEL VERY UNDER-CONFIDENT IN FRONT OF HOT GIRLS OF OTHER COLLEGES: I was the Cultural Secretary in Vindhyachal House. I, with my 3 friends went to meet the Cultural Secretary of Miranda House, Delhi University, for conducting ‘socials’. She was that typical DU totta wearing hot pants and we somehow managed to complete the meeting and finalise the socials. For years, we three boasted about meeting this hottie and getting respected for being an IITian. Later we came to know that they felt so proud of being in the company of IITians and used to boast in front of other girls. Even after knowing this, we remained under-confident and very shy. Recently, at 34–35 (at 29, I quit my corporate career to devote my entire life to films as Actor Writer Director) I started becoming extremely confident with hot girls, even with the tv and film celebrities (not big ones, don’t know them personally yet, but moderately successful celebrities) but it was not because of being an IITian but because of being content and happy with myself even when alone. When you don’t push too hard for something, it comes to you organically and the process is beautiful. IITians cannot realise this tip while in the college, they’re too shy with girls.
3. MAJORITY OF THE STUDENTS CALL THEIR SENIORS BY THEIR NAMES, PREFERABLY BY THEIR LAST NAMES: Very few IITians call their seniors Sir. Even many freshers call the final year students by their name. I was called Lal, not ‘Lal Sir’ by majority of my juniors. However, after I passed out, most of the new batch of juniors always called me Sir, probably because they entered when I was gone so I might have been like an oldie for them :).
4. NOT EVEN ONE-THIRD OF IITians WORK IN THEIR OWN ENGINEERING FIELD: Yes, they prefer going into finance, consulting, software, business (in non-technical fields) and many other career options. Those who’re really serious about their technical field, they generally go to the US to do a MS or a PhD. Only when an IITian goes into a totally unfathomable field like entertainment, people say that you wasted a seat. However, the truth is that if you’re a mechanical engineer and if you are doing anything other than a mechanical engineering job, business or consultancy, you’ve wasted a seat - technically speaking. Personally, I feel ‘jab jaago tabhi savera’ - whenever you realise your true calling, just go for it instead of being entangled in the social pressures of following your formal education. Know that Mahatma Gandhi was a lawyer and if he thought about wasting a seat, we would have probably been slaves for much longer. I know Mahatma Gandhi worked for a greater cause than working in business consulting after doing law, but you know what I mean :).
5. THERE ARE QUITE A FEW GIRLS WHO ARE VERY HOT, SEXY AND OBVIOUSLY BRAINY: It is just a myth that all girls at IITs look ugly. That’s so not true even if we ourselves don’t want to believe it. Now being in the film industry, I know few IIT girls who have won fashion contests and are professional fashion models and actors.
6. IN EXTRA-CURRICULARS WE CAN GIVE A RUN-FOR-MONEY TO ANY INSTITUTE IN THE ENTIRE COUNTRY: I remember NSD professors coming to judge our inter-hostel Hindi play competition (9 plays). They were absolutely shocked the level at which the students operated even though there was not a single drama teacher in the institute. All plays were directed by the students themselves without an iota of formal training. Before announcing the results, they expressed this and told very confidently that 2 of these 9 plays are so good that they can be staged as a professional play anywhere in the world! We had two lawn tennis All India top 20 ranked players studying there. We had exceptionally talented dancers, artists et al. Some of them learnt these extra curricular activities at IIT itself and within a couple of years became damn good. The typical image of an IIT guy being boring, studious, with a chashma is not true ...

A lot of answers over here have taken a dig at the salaries offered and the academic stereotypes attached to an IIT-ian. The Hostels for Undergraduates ain’t pretty.

Somewhere down the line, maybe I had to vent it out. The fresh entrants enjoy the lavish royalties of the newer hostels as they enter and they are in for a disappointment as the enter their sophomore and third-year, because the living standards just don’t cut in.

Let me describe my room when I first entered in.

  1. Bunk Beds:

Yes. Sharing a room with bunk beds was never a problem, but it gets kinda sad realizing you have to sleep with the lights on. And when you go on top (I like the way you think, but no), the light flashes brighter than the shiniest star. A real star boy that, disturbing your sleep while your room mate wishes to study, casually, below.

Also, not a pretty feeling to wake up and have your hands ram against the ceiling fan in its full swing. Not a pretty feeling.
  2. Cleanliness woes:

With the new cleanliness rules being placed by the institute (from the orders of MHRD apparently), we have our rooms cleaned by the PHO workers, once a month. Yes, IITs were never mend to quench your OCD fetishes so living dirty, more than a choice, is now just a compulsion.

What’s in my room? Oh that’s just dung. Apparently they (few drunk seniors of mine) locked a cow inside my room. And it did create some havoc, dismantling the “furniture” and dumping it’s way to glory. Yes. these happen!
  3. One Single Table:

Two people in a room. One single chair and a table to study. Ridiculous. Sure, we eventually adapt to study on our beds and compromise to share and take turns, at times, I find this sort of cramping ridiculous.
  4. Utter Randomness:

You can go out and come back to find your room having all sorts of random stuffs. From buckets, to smelly Football boots, to unattended rough notes, and emptied beer bottles. Just enough to make you go, WTF. Why?

There is absolutely no doubt on the fact that there needs to be an improvement in the type of hostels provided. But then, this is where we learn to live, develop, adjust, understand and grow as a human being. Every legend once started small. Every successful IIT-ian would probably sit back in his lavish bungalow and reminisce on the rooms he had to live in for two long years.

And yes. Our Institute does spend its money wisely. From having amongst the most beautiful Lecture Halls and Departments, I guess money is totally well spent to make the students stay away from their rooms and attend these beauties. A propagandish conspiracy? You never know!

  2. Student-Run Initiatives: Many IITs have student-run organizations and clubs that organize events, workshops, and competitions. These initiatives often provide valuable experience in leadership, project management, and teamwork.
  3. Alumni Network: The IIT alumni network is incredibly strong and supportive. Many IITians benefit from this network in terms of mentorship, job referrals, and entrepreneurial ventures.
  4. Diverse Backgrounds: IITians come from a wide range of backgrounds, not just academically, but also geographically and culturally. This diversity enriches the learning environment and fosters broader perspectives.
  5. Campus Life: Beyond academics, campus life includes various cultural, sports, and technical festivals (like Techfest and cultural fests) that are organized entirely by students. These events are a significant part of the IIT experience.
  6. Humor and Jargon: IITians often have a unique sense of humor and use specific jargon or memes that are not easily understood outside the IIT community. This creates a sense of belonging and identity.
  7. Rigorous Schedules: Many students face rigorous schedules that involve long hours of study, project work, and assignments. This often leads to a culture of "all-nighters" during critical periods.
  8. Unique Courses: Some IITs offer unconventional courses that may not be widely known, like interdisciplinary studies that combine technology with arts or social sciences.
  9. Internships and Placements: The placement process is highly competitive, and while many students secure jobs through campus placements, a significant number also pursue internships and projects that lead to job offers.
  10. Hidden Gems: Each IIT has its own set of “hidden gems” in terms of faculty or courses that are not mainstream but are highly regarded by students who take them.

These insights reflect the unique experiences of IITians and contribute to a shared identity among them.

  5. Not everyone at IIT gets a 1 cr. pakage. Most of them have to settle for a job of 1 lac per month and for a 22 year old Indian, this is no less for a start and way better than most of the people at the same age.
  6. IIT campuses are a beautiful place to be. They are green, clean, big and it is delight to walk around the campus at night.
  7. Sleeping at 2 A.M is considered to be sleeping early at night.
  8. IIT’s have people who smoke and drink a lot. That’s a hard truth.
  9. Girls are a rare breed at an IIT and most of the IITians are single because of this reason and not because we are too much desperate.
  10. We have to face a lot more competition after coming to IIT than we faced for getting here because everyone here is the topper of their school. Everyone here has heard the phrase “Tu to topper hai..IIT me bhi top krta hoga”(You were a topper in the school so you must be the same in IIT).
  11. Depression is not rare in IITians and the administration has taken many steps to reduce this like sticking posters in every room having the number of counseling cell, suicide proofing the fan(If someone hangs, the fan will break), etc.

I’ll keep adding points as I think of any.

  • Every IITian knows the names of all the girls studying in the IIT. Don't think they are very good at learning. The names are few, and when there is lots of discussion about them, chats with them. Then it is easy to remember the names.
  • IITians are considered to be someone having no social qualities. But believe me, an IITian is the one who is having hundreds of friends, participating in dancing, debates and many more. All the largest College fests are those which are organized in IITs.They too are organised by the students, the IITians.
  • If you think IITians must be enjoying their classes, then the answer is big yes because either they sleep in the class or they play games like the mini militia in the class. They have completely no idea what the professor is teaching even most of the IITians don't even know one-two teachers by face.
  • Once you get selected in IIT, you don't have to worry about anything. This is what others think! But the truth is we have to do a lot of hard work to survive here! Yes, survive! Otherwise, you can be expelled by the institution (e.g recently 72 students were expelled by IITR )Here Life is hard as far as maintaining good CG is concerned !though you might think getting 8 CG is very easy! But you realise the truth very soon!
  • Majority of us like to show off that we are IITians, in the first year. The number of such people decreases exponentially on being senior. If you find someone wearing IIT's T-Shirt then either that was the only cleaned cloth he had or he is single! • During exams, the Xerox shop owner knows the syllabus much better than the students. All the projects and assignments are submitted only on the last date of submission.
  • The average package is INR 7-8 lakhs per annum. The whole world thinks that we don't work for less than INR 1 crore.
  • Here you can find many people who are academically weak but are very good in a particular field such as singer, instrumentalists, dancer, player, actor, data analyst, manager, consultant, finance freak than the trained professionals. I mean to say that you can't predict the success of an IITian just by looking at his/her grades.

In spite of all these what makes IITians successful in lives is that it’s the place of collection of best minds in the country and they grow each day and learn every day.

Like many of you reading this, I’ve been looking for ways to earn money online in addition to my part-time job. But you know how it is – the internet is full of scams and shady-grady stuff, so I spent weeks trying to find something legit. And I finally did!

Like many of you reading this, I’ve been looking for ways to earn money online in addition to my part-time job. But you know how it is – the internet is full of scams and shady-grady stuff, so I spent weeks trying to find something legit. And I finally did!

Freecash surprised me in all the right ways. I’ve earned over $1,000 in one month without ‘living’ on the platform. I was skeptical right up until the moment I cashed out to my PayPal.

What is Freecash all about?

Basically, it’s a platform that pays you for testing apps and games and completing surveys. This helps developers improve their applications while you make some money.

  • You can earn by downloading apps, testing games, or completing surveys. I love playing games, so that’s where most of my earnings came from (oh, and my favorites were Warpath, Wild Fish, and Domino Dreams).
  • There’s a variety of offers (usually, the higher-paying ones take more time).
  • Some games can pay up to $1,000 for completing a task, but these typically require more hours to finish.
  • On average, you can easily earn $30–50/day.
  • You pick your options — you’re free to choose whatever apps, games, and surveys you like.

Of course, it’s not like you can spend 5 minutes a day and become a millionaire. But you can build a stable income in reasonable time, especially if you turn it into a daily habit.

Why did I like Freecash?

  • It’s easy. I mean it. You don’t have to do anything complicated. All you need is to follow the task and have some free time to spend on it. For some reason, I especially enjoyed the game Domino Dreams. My initial goal was to complete chapter 10 to get my first $30, but I couldn’t stop playing and ended up completing chapter 15. It was lots of fun and also free money: $400 from that game alone.
  • No experience needed. Even if you’ve never done any ‘testing’ before, you can do this. You get straightforward task descriptions, so it’s impossible to go wrong. A task you might expect is something like: Download this game and complete all challenges in 14 days.
  • You can do it from anywhere. I was earning money while taking the bus, chilling on the couch, and during my breaks.
  • Fast cashing out. I had my earnings in my PayPal account in less than 1 day. I’m not sure how long it takes for other withdrawal methods (crypto, gift cards, etc.), but it should be fast as well.
  • You can earn a lot if you’re consistent. I’ve literally seen users in the Leaderboard making $3,000 in just one month. Of course, to get there, you need time, but making a couple of hundred dollars is really easy and relatively fast for anyone.

Don’t miss these PRO tips to earn more:

I feel like most users don’t know about these additional ways to make more money with Freecash:

  • Free promo codes: You can follow Freecash on social media to get weekly promo codes for free coins, which you can later exchange for money.
  • Daily rewards and bonuses: If you use the platform daily, you’ll get additional bonuses that help you earn more.
  • In-app purchases to speed up processes: While playing, you can buy items to help speed up task completion. It’s optional, but it really saved me time, and I earned 4x more than I spent.
  • Choose the highest-paying offers: Check New Offers and Featured Offers to get the best opportunities that pay the most.

Honestly, I still can’t believe I was able to earn this much so easily. And I’ve actually enjoyed the whole process. So, if you’re looking for some truly legit ways to earn money online, Freecash is a very good option.

And honestly? Putting them to use was way easier than I expected. I bet you can knock out at least three or four of these right now—yes, even from your phone.

Don’t wait like I did. Go ahead and start using these money secrets today!

And honestly? Putting them to use was way easier than I expected. I bet you can knock out at least three or four of these right now—yes, even from your phone.

Don’t wait like I did. Go ahead and start using these money secrets today!

1. Cancel Your Car Insurance

You might not even realize it, but your car insurance company is probably overcharging you. In fact, they’re kind of counting on you not noticing. Luckily, this problem is easy to fix.

Don’t waste your time browsing insurance sites for a better deal. A company called Insurify shows you all your options at once — people who do this save up to $996 per year.

If you tell them a bit about yourself and your vehicle, they’ll send you personalized quotes so you can compare them and find the best one for you.

Tired of overpaying for car insurance? It takes just five minutes to compare your options with Insurify and see how much you could save on car insurance.

2. Ask This Company to Get a Big Chunk of Your Debt Forgiven

A company called National Debt Relief could convince your lenders to simply get rid of a big chunk of what you owe. No bankruptcy, no loans — you don’t even need to have good credit.

If you owe at least $10,000 in unsecured debt (credit card debt, personal loans, medical bills, etc.), National Debt Relief’s experts will build you a monthly payment plan. As your payments add up, they negotiate with your creditors to reduce the amount you owe. You then pay off the rest in a lump sum.

On average, you could become debt-free within 24 to 48 months. It takes less than a minute to sign up and see how much debt you could get rid of.

3. You Can Become a Real Estate Investor for as Little as $10

Take a look at some of the world’s wealthiest people. What do they have in common? Many invest in large private real estate deals. And here’s the thing: There’s no reason you can’t, too — for as little as $10.

An investment called the Fundrise Flagship Fund lets you get started in the world of real estate by giving you access to a low-cost, diversified portfolio of private real estate. The best part? You don’t have to be the landlord. The Flagship Fund does all the heavy lifting.

With an initial investment as low as $10, your money will be invested in the Fund, which already owns more than $1 billion worth of real estate around the country, from apartment complexes to the thriving housing rental market to larger last-mile e-commerce logistics centers.

Want to invest more? Many investors choose to invest $1,000 or more. This is a Fund that can fit any type of investor’s needs. Once invested, you can track your performance from your phone and watch as properties are acquired, improved, and operated. As properties generate cash flow, you could earn money through quarterly dividend payments. And over time, you could earn money off the potential appreciation of the properties.

So if you want to get started in the world of real-estate investing, it takes just a few minutes to sign up and create an account with the Fundrise Flagship Fund.

This is a paid advertisement. Carefully consider the investment objectives, risks, charges and expenses of the Fundrise Real Estate Fund before investing. This and other information can be found in the Fund’s prospectus. Read them carefully before investing.

4. Earn Up to $50 this Month By Answering Survey Questions About the News — It’s Anonymous

The news is a heated subject these days. It’s hard not to have an opinion on it.

Good news: A website called YouGov will pay you up to $50 or more this month just to answer survey questions about politics, the economy, and other hot news topics.

Plus, it’s totally anonymous, so no one will judge you for that hot take.

When you take a quick survey (some are less than three minutes), you’ll earn points you can exchange for up to $50 in cash or gift cards to places like Walmart and Amazon. Plus, Penny Hoarder readers will get an extra 500 points for registering and another 1,000 points after completing their first survey.

It takes just a few minutes to sign up and take your first survey, and you’ll receive your points immediately.

5. Get Up to $300 Just for Setting Up Direct Deposit With This Account

If you bank at a traditional brick-and-mortar bank, your money probably isn’t growing much (c’mon, 0.40% is basically nothing).

But there’s good news: With SoFi Checking and Savings (member FDIC), you stand to gain up to a hefty 3.80% APY on savings when you set up a direct deposit or have $5,000 or more in Qualifying Deposits and 0.50% APY on checking balances — savings APY is 10 times more than the national average.

Right now, a direct deposit of at least $1K not only sets you up for higher returns but also brings you closer to earning up to a $300 welcome bonus (terms apply).

You can easily deposit checks via your phone’s camera, transfer funds, and get customer service via chat or phone call. There are no account fees, no monthly fees and no overdraft fees. And your money is FDIC insured (up to $3M of additional FDIC insurance through the SoFi Insured Deposit Program).

It’s quick and easy to open an account with SoFi Checking and Savings (member FDIC) and watch your money grow faster than ever.

5. Stop Paying Your Credit Card Company

If you have credit card debt, you know. The anxiety, the interest rates, the fear you’re never going to escape… but a website called AmONE wants to help.

If you owe your credit card companies $100,000 or less, AmONE will match you with a low-interest loan you can use to pay off every single one of your balances.

The benefit? You’ll be left with one bill to pay each month. And because personal loans have lower interest rates (AmONE rates start at 6.40% APR), you’ll get out of debt that much faster.

It takes less than a minute and just 10 questions to see what loans you qualify for.

6. Lock In Affordable Term Life Insurance in Minutes.

Let’s be honest—life insurance probably isn’t on your list of fun things to research. But locking in a policy now could mean huge peace of mind for your family down the road. And getting covered is actually a lot easier than you might think.

With Best Money’s term life insurance marketplace, you can compare top-rated policies in minutes and find coverage that works for you. No long phone calls. No confusing paperwork. Just straightforward quotes, starting at just $7 a month, from trusted providers so you can make an informed decision.

The best part? You’re in control. Answer a few quick questions, see your options, get coverage up to $3 million, and choose the coverage that fits your life and budget—on your terms.

You already protect your car, your home, even your phone. Why not make sure your family’s financial future is covered, too? Compare term life insurance rates with Best Money today and find a policy that fits.

3. Students at IITs, especially the newer ones, regularly watch the NPTEL videos to clarify their concepts and gain knowledge on certain topics.
4. Most of the IITians are super active and engaged in extra curricular or non-academic social activities such as music, fine arts, street dance, writing, improv comedy, etc.
5. Unfortunately, not all professors at IITs are good at teaching. With all due respect to the teaching profession, I don’t think the selection process for the professors at IIT is as rigorous as the selection process for the students.

That we are not that confident and egoistic as people consider us. We may act confident but deep down we are disappointed by the fact that being among the best crowd in the country, we are not better than anyone else in the campus. It takes us no time to realize that here we are nothing.

Contrary to the beliefs life is not 'chill' once you get into IITs. People here are under tremendous pressure to do awesome things and get ahead of others. And inspite of all the hard work, getting a decent job is hard, as opposed to the myth. The media does a great job in creating unworthy hype about pay pack

Confessions Of An IITian: What I Learned, And Didn’t, In My 4 Years Of College

Something has been bothering me for the past few days. After days of soul searching and lonely walks across the dim-lit roads of the institute across the Powai lake, it wasn’t difficult for me to understand what this abstract thing is that has been so unsettling. And, there has been a reason for the whole storm to start in my brain. In less than a week from now, I will be sitting for my placements. For many of my friends and classmates, placements are a very big thing in life where they get to take up a much hyped-high profile, good paying job, the dreams which we were shown when we slogged nights and days preparing for IIT-JEE, frequently splashing cold water into our almost closing eyes to stay all awake in order to ace the JEE. The slogging ensured that a majority of us entered into these prestigious institutes with an eye on the ‘package’ and the ‘job’, and not on evolving into engineers and to develop technology. The worst, many of us will now end up as Investment Bankers, Analysts and Consultants, and not as Engineers as we have been trained for the past four years.

Exactly three and a half years ago (July 2011), I got admitted into the Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science in IIT Bombay on a rainy July day when Bombay monsoons were in full flow. Today, as I am awaiting for the results of my seventh semester, with just one remaining, I will have to confess, with contempt and despair, that academically I stand where I had been in July 2011. I have aged four long years, or to be precise, 40 months, during my stay here in IIT Bombay. The things I learnt and experienced here are undoubtedly numerous. The place gave me what I could have not have asked for in other institutes – a liberal space for thoughts to flourish. I have grown up all along my stay here looking at the same trees, the same roads, the same departments and the same hostels and of course, the same canteens and lounges. With every passing Bombay monsoon, I evolved as a human being pioneering different ambitions and dimensions of my life with maturity – emotional, intellectual and ideological issues, nurturing hobbies and passions. I can speak on and on of what this place has given me, but will save the same for the sentimental post which I will write towards the end of my stay here. I want to concentrate more on what I haven’t learnt.

I have enjoyed everything, literally everything, in IIT Bombay except academics, which is the main reason why I am here. The three and a half years are an academic void, which I hate to say. As I am writing this, I understand that this is going to haunt me for the rest of my life. The thought that I will leave the institute in April 2015 with the same or incremental increase in academic knowledge as I entered this institute with in July 2011 is already creeping in and is getting very hard to digest. The little I learnt during the course of mugging for exams get erased as soon as the exam is done. I am pretty much sure that I would not be able to take a paper of a course in a previous semester now.

How could I have expected something different if I had bunked classes or just attended them for the sake of the 80% attendance rule? Waking up at 8.20 AM and dragging myself to a lecture at 8.30 AM and reaching the classroom at 8.45 AM just because the professor will force the 80% attendance rule has been part and parcel of my culture and life all along the seven semesters. And, numerous of them went by with the professor singing lullabies in the Air-Conditioned classrooms. Not to forget, the seats are not too uncomfortable for a short nap either. Why would the consequence be something different if I had spent just the night before to study even for the end semester examinations? Why would I be academically equipped to be an ‘engineer’ if I don’t even go through the textbooks suggested for the course but end up mugging the few tutorial problems and last year examination papers during the last minute?

As I end this, I am quite unsure whether this is my experience alone or the issue of a major part of the student community. I also can’t pass on a judgement on whether it is my problem or if that is the problem of the education system. But, one thing I can tell you with a certain amount of surety is that there are many students like me and the system failed all of them. Every one of them! While I don’t deny the mindset problem, I also believe that the education system can be fixed with proper dialogue and deliberations etching a progressive, inclusive and more practical form of education. While the quality of research by the professors is unquestionable, their teaching standards definitely need improvement. The fact that some professors have been successful in waking me up for a 8.30 AM class in the Bombay monsoons or a cold January winter is testimony of some wonderful professors we have. Sadly and unfortunately, they form a very tiny part of the professor community. The rigorous academic curriculum needs to be reviewed to make sure that a wider diversity is allowed to be opted for by the students. And, the most important treatment for the malaise is to disincentivize all the coaching institutions which are nothing but factories churning out to-be engineers, thus inspiring humans to run a rat race. The last one is the long term solution. That would have saved people like me from following this race, which I became a part of, despite several and repeated attempts by my parents to convince me to take up Humanities.

All this is propelling me to now take up further studies and stay in the academic field, this time in a field where I would not be academically handicapped after one or two years. I would want to be academically proficient, at least in a single subject which I am interested in, and subjects like Political Science, International Relations and Sociology always enticed me. This has taught me a lesson for life – to never run a rat race until someone aims the gun at point-blank. I would not like to take up a job precisely for this reason and also would not repeat the same mistake and will consciously try to gain expertise in the field which I will chose out of choice and passion, but not out of compulsion and bad-faith.

At least in IIT Bombay , This one for me :

In the starting weeks of the Insti , I saw people wearing T-shirts of various clubs of the college . I used to think that they must have done lots for the particular club to get the T-shirt , and would have lots of enthu for the particular activity .

But after a month , I received a mail in my GPO ( Common college mail ) , informing about the sales of the T-shirt of XYZ Club for Rs.300 .

5) That not all other engineering college students are dumber than all IITians. Afterall just a 6 hr exam cannot measure your true potential.

So whether an IITian or not never stop dreaming. IIT is a brand and it happens to produce a lot of "BEST" for sure. But Hard Work beats Talent when Talent does not Work Hard.

  3. No one studies here but before exam everyone studies like af (I am also one of them 🤣)
  4. Everyone here just talk about placements and internship rather than something creative and innovative

Hey, IITIANS discover many things after they join college. Many of them are contrary to their expectations.

Some of which we encounter are:-

  • Not all of us wanted to be an IITian. Many of us wanted to join NDA,NIFT,AFMC or any other institute.
  • IITians too study a day before exams. Study routine is not regular.
  • Library is haunted place except a week before exams. Library hours are also extended for our comfort(24 hour open) in exam time. We don’t consider library as a part of campus in normal days.
  • IITians too drink and smoke, many of them almost everyday. Many are addicted to drugs.

EDM NIGHT AT IITR:- COGNI 2019 LOST STORIES

ANISH SOOD|| IIT ROORKEE II COGNIZANCE 2019 || LIVE PERFORMANCE || EDM NIGHT

  • Many of us realise that life is beyond phy, chem and Maths.
  • Our lectures are interesting not because of teacher, mobile games(mini militia and PUBG) make them.
  • Bunk classes and say for proxies to our batchmates and go for a movie with friends is common.
  • Students fail in some of the subjects (back lag jaati h) and may have semester back.
  • Many of times 500+ likes on pics uploaded on Instagram or Facebook is due to IIT tag(pic may not be good).
  • Many of us start preparing for UPSC or CAT because of family pressure and reputation in society.
  • IIT t-shirt are not worn always for show-off. The reason may be that there are no washed shirt left or too lazy to change it.
  • IITians are night-owls. P.C game addiction is in full form at night. All group discussions (backchodi) starts at night only.
  • We need to find a safe place to escape from the #GPL on our Birthday.
  • IITians too develop procrastination. Start delaying many of projects and tutorials.
  • Realise the reality of high income packages by MNC's and reality of placements at international companies.
  • Girls in reality are not ugly what other college students think of them. They are beauty with brain. IIT girls too win fashion contest and are HOT and Sexy.
  • Many of us join annual fest and programs just for certificates (signed by dean) and most importantly hoodies and t-shirts for show-off outside IIT.
  • You may score less than your friend who never attends class and read a night before exams from NPTEL or any other online coaching channel.
  • Interaction with seniors and juniors is more important than your CV. They help a lot during your college years.
  • Sometimes love for politics is much more than studies. Full environment is loaded with politics and hotel parties during student representative elections.
  • Entry of boys at girl's hostel bhawan day is very common.
  • Some seniors are more than friends, they are like brother(Bhai ho sir aap mere).
  • None of the students are going to attend lectures if 75% compulsory attendance is removed.
  • At some IIT's mess food and hostel infrastructure is worse than private colleges.
  • Suicide at IIT's is very rare. Many people have misconception that IITians do it in stress.
  • Use of LAN is more for P**N, watching online web series, and youtube videos rather than study.
  • Many students switch from their core subjects and start coding and learn other languages, when they realise the reality of placements.
  • Open book tests are also taken and you need to be more careful and afraid in that case.
  • Cheating in exams is very common. Sometimes teacher fail each of the students who have same answer in their sheet.
  • Not all IITians are single. Their relationship status can be checked at college cultural fest.
  • We learn to never mess with professors, its like a crime.
  • There are only few IITians who are good at studies others are good at atleast one other thing beside studies.
  • Most important:- contrary to everyone's notion most IITians want to help their lovely country INDIA. Hailing from middle and low-class background and no availability of proper resources from government they have no option other than to go abroad.

Well! There are many such things, but I would like to mention few things here:

  1. Average Package at IIT is around 8–10 lacs per annum. People think that if a student enters in to IIT, he will become earn in Crores. Its a myth.
  2. IIT is the best platform to excel in any field such as arts, music, dramatics or even movie making. IITs have produced good musician, actors as well as directors. Only an IIT’an can experience these things when he is living campus life.
  3. IIT’ans don’t have girlfriends like other college students do. It is primarily because sex ratio in IIT is 1:10 . So, you know the reason! :P

  4. IIT network (All over world) is so strong and IIT brand help us to connect so well with our seniors. Also, they are always there to help you out.
  5. At IIT (Specifically at IIT Bombay), you need not address your senior by calling them, Sir or Madam, even some respectful words like ‘aap’ works very well.
  6. If student are wearing IIT t-shirt, then one thing you can guess is “ THE GUY IS SINGLE” and he is looking for someone. :P
  7. The best teacher at IIT will be your friend or your senior who will help you out for studies and score good marks.
  8. Many of the IITans don’t take daily bath. :D
  9. We have many lingos like, Dadda, Batka, kya fart hain, daya etc which only an IITan can understand.
  10. Almost all IITs have their night cafes , Like we had Maddu mess at IIT Bombay where you can get delicious south Indian food at night.
  11. Most of the IITan take their branch not because of choice but because of their IIT JEE Rank.

The most important fact that only we know is that there a lot of false rumors about IITs and IITians in India. Here are a few of them-

1.) Every IITian is desperate for girls.

Reality- This is the most stupid myth about IITians. Not all IITians are desperate for girls. In fact, most of us are not even ready for relationships. Our career and personal goals are far more important to us than any other thing and we prefer to stay away from things that might divert us from our path to success. Reality- This is the most stupid myth about IITians. Not all IITians are desperate for girls. In fact, most of us are not even ready for relationships. Our career and personal goals are far more important to us than any other thing and we prefer to stay away from things that might divert us from our path to success. Again, I would like to stress on the fact that not all of us are the same. Not that we are not interested in girls at all. But Desperate is a strong word. We do fall in love, we do break our hearts. But that does not make us despos, does it? A few among us are despos, agreed! But assuming all of us to be the same is similar to assuming that all men are rapists!

2.) All girls at IITs are UGLY!

Reality- Seriously? Do you really believe this bullshit? I personally know a lot of girls in my college who are far more pretty than many other girls in my neighbourhood. And it is a crime to call someone ugly only going by their looks. Some people go to an extent to calling them non-males. Wow! I pity you guys! Their beauty lies not only in their looks but also in their personality. They are confident, independent, strong and that makes them beautiful!

3.) All IITians grab an annual paycheck of atleast INR 2,000,000 or above.

Reality- Guys, those are average salaries offered in our campus. And there is a reason we call it average. There are a few people who earn a lot more than that, and there are many who earn less than that. When Bill Gates walks into a bar, everyone there becomes a millionaire on an average.

4.) IITians do not love their country and prefer to settle abroad.

Reality- We love India from the bottom of our hearts! But, a lot of us come from middle class families and money is amongst our major priorities. We do have a family to look after. Secondly, the research facilities even in these top universities in India are not good enough. Some of us have to move abroad due to these reasons. But again, a very few IITians are working abroad. A lot of us are still working in and for India. In fact, the number of Keralites, Gujratis and Punjabies abroad is much more than IITians. But I have never seen people questioning their patriotism. So why do we become hypocrites when it comes to IITians?

There are many more myths about IITians. But time does not not permit me to bust all of them. I will keep on updating the answer when I have time to spare.

  • Going to library and reading in library are completely two different thing in IIT.
  • Library is the most haunted place in IIT untill semester is nearer. Library in iit are open for 24 hours during exam because even they know when actually students read.

  • Some student in IITs are involved jn smoking, drinking and some are addicted to drugs also. But all these things are completely banned there .
  • Bathing more then thrice a week is a sin in IIT. Rarely you can find people who take bath daily.
  • During exams the xerox shop owner knows the syllabus much better then the students. All the projects and assignments are submitted only on the last date of submission .
  • IITians have a unique way of celebrating their friends birthday that is called GPL that can not be described in word. you can google to find some pics and video.

  • We have a student run magazine which does all kinds of surveys ranging from number of suicides happening in the campus to the percentage of people in a relationship. They also did a survey about how, where and what kind of porn students like to watch!!
  • We sometimes have open book exams while some professors allow us to take any number of cheat sheets to the exams. But we donot prefer these exams since they will be usually tougher.
  • And for gods sake not everybody in IIT gets a package of 1 crore. The average package is around 8 to 10 lpa.

A myth exists that an IITian will get a huge package with monthly salary of lakhs.

But another myth exists that an IITian starts getting placement offers just after he gets into IIT.

I am a first year undergraduate at IITR.I was on my midsem break of 2nd sem and one friend of my uncle met me casually and asked me normal things like kab aaya, etc.

Suddenly he asked me that “beta abhi tak 3 4 package to aa hi gaye honge.”

I was shocked that he is asking me this question although I was in middle of only my 2nd sem in the college. Then I told him the reality that things are not that easy in an IIT.

Entrance exams are meant for rejecting students because of soo much competition. By God's grace or reservation and soo much hardwork if someone of Hindi or regional language student able to crack entrance through this barrier then after admitting respective medical or engineering college many students couldn't cope up with the compulsory English medium syllabus [except some God gifted] then back after back in the semester exams and depression after depression that's why in many IIT's, NIT's, medical colleges many students commit suicide, start taking alcohol, drugs, weed, cigarettes etc. and then the students remain unemployed. Many students starts YouTube channels for future JEE & NEET aspirants , Start-Ups where probability of success rate is 1/100%, rest of the students start preparing for last hope of miracle famous UPSC Civil Services Exam.

IIT's famous B.Tech degree is treated as not as engineering degree, It's your capability degree.
It's like if you want to be a photographer, writer, IAS/IPS officer , business consultant, YouTuber, singer, actor, chaiwala, want to do management studies in IIMs, B.Tech is treated as starter of main course. 😂

IITs are overrated universities of India. There is not any special magic happens in IIT, their brilliant students create magic. Media & billion dollar coaching industry created this 1crore fake hype by converting USD into INR. Many people think 1crore for 1 month 😂, sorry but it's not 1crore for 1 months it's for a year in expansive USA. Reality is only 5-6 maggu students per year gets placed in international locations with 1crore CTC through conversion of USD, in soo much expensive cities like Bay area, mountain view, San Francisco, San Diego, Los Angeles, New York City of US. Where everything is soo much expensive. There rent for 1 month is approx 4 lacs rupees if you stay alone without sharing. There is also expansive food expenses you could hardly save some penny over there.
Entire 99.9% students irrespective of their major branches placed in India with average 50k-60k monthly packages with 9-5 coding jobs in expensive cities like Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Chennai. Only some students placed in core branch jobs.

Rest of the students, who didn't get selected, maximum convent school students opted for private colleges but the poor hindi & regional medium students opted for B.A or B. Sc after that maximum student ends their education and maximum students start to look for govt. or private 3rd grade/4th grade jobs.

It's the harsh reality and big issue of India education system and people's mentality.

I was a bit skeptical before writing this answer, as usually when people refer the term IITians they mean the B. Tech students here and not the M. Tech ones.

But as I have done my Bachelors's in a Tier-3 Local Engineering College from Mumbai and my Master’s here at IIT Madras, I think I can give a comparative analysis between both the Universities.

But as I have done my Bachelors's in a Tier-3 Local Engineering College from Mumbai and my Master’s here at IIT Madras, I think I can give a comparative analysis between both the Universities.

  1. Opportunities, activities, events are just insane here: I don’t know where to start on this point. My first week in IIT when I opened the institute mail, a bunch of unread mails was there. Someone is speaking about how to do research, Turing Award winner about research, Nobel laureates, saints from ashram talking about yoga and how to improve concentration, NGO’s talking about national campaigns and whatnot.

I literally don’t remember anyone visiting my undergraduate campus and giving any such kind of lectures or talks. All we did was running here and there for meaningless fest organizations and getting a certificate and consoling ourselves by saying we get “experience” by doing all this.
  2. The placement process from campus recruitment is easy here: Most of the companies which come here do not visit local engineering college campuses and their offline process is way tougher than the campus recruitment one. I have seen interviews asking just basic questions which by the way any engineering student(with some preparation time) would have answered and students here bagging the job.

In no way, I am implying that the students here do not deserve these sorts of placements or they do not work hard, but the benefit of doubt students graduating from here get is just appalling.
  3. Packages here are structured differently, but they are good: CTC is not the same as the base, also CTC may not be the cost to the company only for one year. CTC can have 4 years salary structure(Microsoft, Salesforce, Cisco, Oracle, Amazon).

It’s cute to see other students complaining that they end up with salaries as less as 3.3LPA. Brother in our university mostly (read 85%) students get salaries around 3.3LPA. And I am still from Mumbai, the financial capital of India and a metro city where companies can easily come for campus recruitment.

I guess B. Tech students here do not understand the actual unemployment problem in India. One of the B. Tech students here commented that Microsoft here is a mass recruiter(It regularly hires 17–20 students every year from almost every IIT). For people who don't know, mass recruiting is hiring around 200-300 students from a batch, from all the colleges around. There are no mass recruiters in IIT.

Saying all this, I think I should clarify this too, your engineering stream is extremely important for placements.
  4. Mostly professors here aren’t active on research: A lot of students have already mentioned this in their answers and mostly we(Master’s and Ph.D.’s) get to deal with this problem. If you’re coming for an M.S or a Ph.D. to an IIT make sure your guide is good. Professors over time become busy with the administrative work of the department and the young professors(assistant and associate) usually are active on research work, that too only selected people from them actually aim for A* conference papers.

But even after saying all this, comparing currently where the Indian education system is, this is the best that you get. In my undergraduate university, I am sure the faculty wouldn’t even have a journal-level conference paper submitted by themselves.
  5. Undergraduate students are really competitive: Competition to get good grades is crazy here, and so is the jealousy among friends. Students seem to relax and say they only study for one week and all, but the same students will argue with the TA and profs even for 1 single mark. I have seen 2nd-year student crying because in LAB test one of his test cases didn't pass.

Again not here to make fun of the undergraduate students or anything, I believe because most of the students here have been toppers before coming here, and all of them have great expectations from themselves. Not to mention how the parents and the media reinforce their beliefs, and indirectly(or unknowingly?) have created this environment of high expectations.

It’s after coming here most of the students realize that, how average they’re and only some of the students studying here are truly geniuses or something.

After coming here only we learn how to handle failures, and believe me, most of us become really humble by the time we graduate(This includes Master’s students too).

There are actually many points which can be shared, but most of the things have been already mentioned. Other than that, the answers which I read none of them were similar to my perspective so added a few.

After my marriage, me and my wife were staying at different locations for few months due to our jobs. So, we could only meet around once a month when either of us travelled to the other’s location. One of the months when I was supposed to visit her, I could not go due to whatever reasons and I informed her that. But, after few days I saw that I could visit her on the next weekend. I decided to make it a surprise. It was fine till then but I also decided to make it interesting. So, I started acting aloof and indifferent to my wife to the extent of ignoring her messages and calls like a legit Sakht Launda :P. I knew that after this when I would appear in front of her unexpectedly, it would be romantic and her happiness would be doubled (just like the night is darkest just before the dawn). Ultimately I travelled to her place and surprised her, but that is a story in itself for another day. The bottomline was that she was angry and anxious with my behaviour, but when I surprised her she was ecstatic to the point of crying. So, mission accomplished. :D

Now when I came back, I was telling this story to a friend and she became outraged instead of the appreciative reaction I was expecting. She went ballistic saying,” Are you guys trained to behave like that in IIT or what?” I asked her what has happened and then she narrated this story of another IITian. Her friend was going out with an IITian for sometime and it was going well. But then suddenly that guy started behaving aloof and rude to the degree that her friend thought that he was going to break up without any reason. When the girl was losing all hope in the relationship, he proposed to marry her in the most romantic way and all was well again. So, this was the reason for her asking me the above question. I did not think much about it at that time and just laughed it away saying it was just a coincidence.

Subsequently, I got to thinking about her question again and it came to me that actually there was some truth in her observation. The revelation came to me that actually the IITian guys are conditioned to behave like that. Let me explain. When we enter IIT, we are exposed to an endless ocean of movies and TV series on the LAN. And most of the guys wet their feet in this ocean by starting to watch Friends. They watch it once completely and then watch it again one more time and then watch random episodes which they like whenever they have nothing else to do. Although the IITians love all the Friends’ characters the favourite character for most IITian guys is Chandler Bing. I don’t know the reason for that, may be he is the only character they can relate with or whatever. And the episode which is the favourite for most of them is the one with Chandler and Monica’s proposal. If you have seen Friends you know what I am talking about, for others, Chandler is going to propose to Monica and he starts behaving aloof and strange to her before the proposal. When the proposal finally happens it is one of the most magical and romantic scenes in TV series history.

Hence, you can now see the connection between the stories I have told above. Most IITians are subconsciously suffering from what I am calling now is the Chandler Bing Syndrome. :D

There are many facts which only IITians know about IIT.Few of them are follows

But you realise the truth very soon !
  • All IIT Profs are incredible ! , another misconception there are few profs with just opposite characters that you might think as of an Ideal professor.
  • Here you can find many Students who pretend as if they are not studying but the truth is they are studying more than you can think of !
  • Here you can find many people who are academically weak but are very good in a particular field such as a hardcore programming ,script writing ,acting, dancing and much more ! I mean to say that you cant predict the success of an IITian just by looking at his/her grades.
  • In IIT you are supposed to do everything ,by saying this I mean to say that you can't depend on anyone, lets say your prof ,you and only you are responsible for everything !
  • As far as placement is concerned ,the average packege is near to 10 lakhs PA,just opposite to what others think ie. Crores of package !

I'll include more points as I recall them ..

This is mainly about IITM, although I'm fairly confident that it may apply to other IITs as well.

  1. Whoever says that politics in India will improve once the politicians are educated, I have news for you. The politics is as dirty if not more even for elections to student posts in an IIT. Candidates purchase votes using alcohol and cigarettes. There is regionalism. Within regions, again people are divided by language. People are further subdivided by caste. Yes, caste based politics plays a huge role, not just in your local assembly polls, even in IITs.

Yes, caste based politics plays a huge role, not just in your local assembly polls, even in IITs.
  2. The amount of corruption by students in positions of power is very high. This again shows that education alone doesn't make a good politician or bureaucrat. The main places where corruption occurs are food coupons for the stalls at Saarang and Shaastra, the two festivals of IITM. There are also instances of certain hostel secretaries purchasing motorbikes using the money they earned by performing as a secretary. Also, a candidate who won in the elections spent close to 25k on the victory treat. He hopes to recover the money back when he assumes responsibility.
  3. Coming to academics, a lot of people claim that the professors are bad and can't teach well. That may be partly true, but a majority of the students don't even bother what is being taught in class. They either sleep in class, spend their time on mobile, or skip it entirely. Finally they blame the professor that (s)he "failed to inculcate interest".
  4. Mess food on the campus may not be the best tasting food, but the menu is designed to provide sufficient nutrition, and I personally haven't seen anyone ever get sick due to mess food. I feel the mess food isn't as bad as people claim (at least in IITM), but since it is a fixed menu and predictable, people get bored quickly. Incidents regarding lack of hygiene are very few, and they are dealt with fairly strictly when they do occur.

Will add more when I can.

I stay in IITKGP.

IIT has THE BEST Wi-Fi

I don't know about 4G but 3G speeds are incomparable to the free unlimited Wi-Fi o IITKGP.

3 MBPS is the speed.

Once I had downloaded 80GB data (I was taking offline playlists from YouTube).

Guess how much time it took ¿ I took hardly a few hours.

Whenever I go out of IIT, I miss IIT's amazing LAN WLAN (Wi-Fi).

So yes, this is the IIT secret :P

Thanks for the A2A

The day you enter in IIT, you will realize the truth. This statement is partially true. Yes, you do get the chance of studying with some of the brightest minds of the country and by some of eminent professors of the world but the story doesn’t ends there. You need to continue the struggle in order to face the competition out there. Everyone doesn’t get BIG Packages. Your package can lie anywhere between 4L to 2Crore depending on what you make out of those 4 years. And believe me those BIG packages are just good for the newspaper headlines because an average pay of an IITian just after B.Tech is not more than 8Lakhs.
  2. The next thing which many believe is that “IITians are geeks”. No it’s not at all like that. You may find a few, but majority is far away from that. Take for example that I have separated you from all your favorites things/hobbies for a period of about 2–3 years. What will you do the moment you get the chance to have them back? That’s exactly what happens with many IITians. Many students try to follow their hobbies which they have left from past few years. You will find many IITians who are good in Poetry, Dance, Singing, Photography, Acting, Sports. The best example is the TVF. Many of their actors are IITians and the guy Badri Chavan who was recently featured in their videos is currently a student at IIT bombay. Or you can see the Inter IIT Sports Meet. The level of competition is not less than that of a district or sometimes a state level championship.

Some quick one-liner facts

  1. Most of the IITians are desperate(What shall I do when the sex ratio in college is 1:10 or sometimes 1:15).
  2. They rarely talk bath (Aim being saving the water for a better future :p )
  3. IITians do smoke/drink a lot.
  4. Most of them go for career in fields other than their majors. Money which many call as a reason of switch, is not always true as we don’t get the chance to study things other than PCM till class 12, so as a result we are left with no choice other than following engineering and sometimes a switch once we are introduced to other fields.
  5. Just like other engineering college students, most of the IITians study a day before exams.
  6. We don’t wear IIT T-shirts to brag, it’s just because once we wore that t-shirt and are quite lazy to change that one :p
  7. IITians do fail in their exams.
  8. We are quite busy throughout the semester, being occupied with a lot things on each day, be it weekend or weekday.
  9. We don’t always like to attend the classes. It’s just for the sake of meeting the attendance criteria.
  10. GPL is the biggest thing that we are afraid of. (It can happen anywhere, at anytime)
  11. A bad one; some people after getting into IIT stop working hard/studying , thinking as if they have made to the top of the world.
  12. Some of the IITians are very good at event organizing & management. (Sometimes we even think of starting an event management company :p)
  13. We do feel for the country and want to serve the nation.
  14. Their is a lot of politics in IITs. (Student body elections is time when you will students in hyperactive mode in the college :p)

Feel free to comment and suggest the edits :)

The IITs very much hyped all over the country, everyone including coaching, parents all say just have to dedicately study for 2 years (or more) , then you will land into a place not less then heaven. Myself was also thinking like that only.

Now, comes the twist. I got a seat in one of the 7 older iits (name can't mention) in one of the so called top three branches. The lectures which were delivered were nothing less than mental torture (environment sort of study and psychology) , but i am not able to figure out why they are teaching us, for our overall development? Does anyone think like that,

Does anyone think like that, Teaching theory can't teach you life lessons, can't teach you essence of that subject, the direct consequence of teaching boring theory only is that students will mugg it up and just write down on the day of exam, and you'r finished, no one is going to bother did you really understood what its importance is, just showing slides and some piece of lines can't show its importance.

This is not confined to non engineering subjects only but also to technical and core subjects also. This is the major drwaback of our indian system where no one express their will to study a particular thing. Things are forcefully imposed on us.

The main problem of our country is not that we regularly see in news channel, its a temporary problem which can be solved but the major problem in our system is no one cares about efforts, ideas, only thing people cares about is result, packages, CGPA, Marks. This is not the problem given to us by anyone rather we ourselves have made problems for ourselves only.

I liked cricket very much and if i had the opportunity i would have made it my career, but i was not having that much talent, not able to bowl properly, not able to bat properly, always seen doing fielding, not getting turn to bat or ball, but still i liked it as much as i liked engineering. Now after seeing such things in iit, i dont think this is the best way to persue my career, i am a fresher so i really don't know how i will spend these 4 years but i want to convey my message to all those who didn't made to jee, IITs are not the best place for study, becoming an engineer, you may became anything else but for becoming an engineering it is not right place.

This is my story, i didn't really want to hurt anyone’s feeling or thinking, but i just poured out my heart what i felt? Maybe i am wrong? Maybe i am not the right person to study engineering?

But one is for sure follow your passion, success will automatically follow.

Professors aren't like your coaching teachers and don't give a shit about your understanding of the subject and continue to blabber in a truly uninteresting way which can even put the most sincere and dedicated student to sleep (although exceptions exist and we have a terminology for these ever ethical guys i.e. muggus). I don't mean to demotivate the aspirants. IIT's academic and cultural situation is much better than the normal state and private colleges. However, IITs aren't the Utopian Universities of your dreams and neither are the Guantanamo Bays of your nightmares. IITs are not the place where everybody cares and nobody scares. IITs would make the man out of you and if the IIT experience is treated properly and with a positive attitude, you'll be leaving the place with memories to cherish, friends for lifetime and an ever lasting positive attitude to life.

Thank you and peace,
