Unless you are really familiar with the person’s taste in books, and they have specified a book they’d like, it’s all too easy to go wrong. Some reasons for not buying books are:

• Books are not generally seen as an exciting gift.
• Books are readily available at the Library.
• They might have already read the book.
• The book you choose may not interest them.
• They would probably prefer something else.

You would be better to buy a gift card at the Book Shop so they can choose what they want.

Better still, ask the person for some gift suggestions within your price range, so the present they receive is useful and liked.
