Since someone mentioned the whole Venusian floating habitat thing…
- You’ll need some water, algae, and sodium chloride to get you started.
- Get your sulfuric acid ( H2SO4 ) from the clouds your mining. This will be used in step 7.
- Now lets get this party started. 4*( 2NaCl + 2H2O => H2 + Cl2 + 2NaOH )
- Save the hydrogen gas which should be 4 H2
- Save the chlorine gas for later (you’ll see)
- And the 2NaOH to be used in the next step
- 4*( H2SO4 +2NaOH => 2H2O + Na2SO4 )
- Now we’ve got the same amount of water out as we put in cool, and some sodium sulfate which we’ll have to save again for later. Keep in mind we’ve also got a bunch of CO2 just floating around on Venus sooo remember that hydrogen gas you saved…
- CO2 + 4H2 => CH4 + 2H2O
- Now we’ve created 2 more H2O then we started with cool and some methane, boo.
- With the methane and the oxygen from your diligent algae that has been munching on that delicious CO2 do the following…
- CH4 + O2 => CO2 + H2O
- Now we have 3 more water then we started with. Cool Cool.
- Ok now for the next part you’ve got 4 Na2SO4. Heat that up to 1000 degrees C and you can vaporize it and separate out 4 Na2 gas, 2 SO2 gas, and 2 O2 gas.
- Now you can recreate the sodium chloride again using the chlorine gas we saved. We’ll use the chlorine gas and your pure sodium (which you should keep far far away from your water) and 8 of your 11 water to go back to step 1.
- Wash rinse repeat. Byproducts of all this are oxygen, water, some CO2 ( but who cares) and sulfur dioxide as a waste product(unless someone knows something better)? Energy cost is high since you’ll need to create a lot of heat and pressure as well as some straight up electricity but we’ll assume you’re getting all the solar power you need sitting in your Super Massive floating ship. ← If you don’t think it’ll be massive you are mistaken. Take some time to think about the correlation between pressure and temperature as it relates to Venus and where you’d like to have your floating city. You’ll want it to be up between 50 and 55 km above the surface. 75 C at 50km and the equivalent of 1 earth atm vs 27 C at 55 km and .5 atmosphere. I know where I’d rather be. Not to mention the host of other engineering problems you’re going to have to work around. Like radiation, wind speed, those pesky acid droplets just floating around, and so much more… Which should be a sobering thought but hell I’m still for it. Venus FTW (for the win)!
I’ve been doing some more thinking about this and you’d probably want to save a certain amount of methane and oxygen to be mined for rocket fuel. Maybe create interplanetary trade for SpaceX carrying those gasses up from venus would be much cheaper and allow for cheaper interplanetary travel once the pipeline between venus and earth orbit is setup. Not really a colonization center but a cheap and efficient fuel source supplying mars and earth orbit with water and rocket fuel.
