My co-worker, Sue, leaned over and said, "I don't mean to alarm you, but the diamond is missing from your ring." She was quite the jokester and I thought she was having me on...until I looked at my hand and discovered the diamond was not there!
I almost immediately knew what had happened. That morning, prior to coming to work, I had moved a very large, very damp load of towels from the washer to the dryer. As I dug into the washer to get a good grip on the heavy towels, my ring had gotten caught in one of the drain holes. Sure enough, I looked carefully at my ring and could clearly see that one

I almost immediately knew what had happened. That morning, prior to coming to work, I had moved a very large, very damp load of towels from the washer to the dryer. As I dug into the washer to get a good grip on the heavy towels, my ring had gotten caught in one of the drain holes. Sure enough, I looked carefully at my ring and could clearly see that one of the prongs was standing straight up.
When I got home, I checked the washer. No diamond. My then-hubby pulled out the drum to check underneath and in the trap--no diamond. Now, this gemstone was no great shakes-- a little less than a third of a carat, with a very visible carbon spot in it, worth maybe $300. A jeweler in town replaced it with a little bigger stone, and added two more prongs, making it almost impossible for me to lose it again.
Several months later, I was at work, trying to find a key I'd lost, to no avail. I dumped my purse out onto my desk, frantically combing through everything to find it. I did not find the key (ended up I'd put it in my desk drawer) but I did find something very shiny--my original diamond! I'd likely loosened the stone when I was doing the laundry, and then it fell out of the setting while I was digging around for something. How it sat at the bottom of my purse for months without me spotting it is quite the mystery.

After wearing my wedding ring for 45 years, it got so thin that the edges became sharp and were cutting my finger when I was doing heavy work.
So my wife and I went to the store to get a new one. We found a $200 ring that was on sale for $150. The store employee told my wife that if she opened a credit card account she would receive a a 40% discount. So the ring cost $90.
When the credit card statement came, my wife paid it in full and has never used it again.
That is my type of a woman.
Not my wedding ring, but my engagement ring from my late fiance.
I wore his ring for years after his death, until I moved in with my husband. I took it off to clean the windows, and couldn't find it.
I called his mother, hysterical that I couldn't find it. She comforted me and said it would turn up.
Two weeks before I got married, his mum decided to make some bread. She emptied her flour canister on to the counter, and out fell my ring.
In the middle of her kitchen, which in turn was in a house I had never been to in the middle of Kerry Ireland… a place I had never been.
EDIT: To clear a few things

When I say “his mother “, I mean my late fiancé's mother.
My husband was cool about me wearing the ring as I put it on my right hand. My late fiancé's mother was Ireland when I lost it and I was in England.
Neither my husband or I had been to the farm she lives in, we still haven't, and I had never been to Kerry (Ireland).
There is no way that ring could have been taken to Ireland without my knowledge.
I don’t. I am married. I am VERY married. I just don’t wear a wedding ring any more.
After squashing three of them lifting heavy objects and having to have them cut off my finger my wife stopped buying them for me. After the first ring it is the wife’s job to buy her husband’s wedding ring. Isn’t it?
Here is an aside for you. If you squash a ring on your finger and can’t get it round enough to get off with pliers or whatever go to your local fire department. They have tools that look similar to can openers that are called, surprisingly, ring cutters. They wont laugh at you. Tight rings,

They have tools that look similar to can openers that are called, surprisingly, ring cutters. They wont laugh at you. Tight rings, squashed rings cutting of circulation are common emergencies. They are real emergencies. You do not want to hear the terms, blood poisoning, gangrene, when it is you they are referring to. Take that blue, turning purple, finger of yours and get that ring cut off! If you need your finger cut off they don’t stop at the finger.
Are men wearing wedding rings sometimes hit on? Yeah, I was. Have no idea why. Were the “Ladies” looking for a safe, no involvement, man? I honestly, sincerely don’t know, nor understand. “Uh, thanks but I have someone else to do. I mean something else to do.”
Men without wedding rings are no less married than men with wedding rings. If a woman talks to me for more than five minutes she is going to hear those two magic words. “My wife.”
My wife [see, I told you so] says that since I try not to lift heavy objects anymore wants to get me a wedding ring. Am I willing to wear a wedding ring? OH, yes! I am, after all, a married man.
I got an “upgrade” a few years ago, when I lost mine. Tom let me watch him make the replacement from a Krugerrand. I think the original ring was a from a double eagle…
I’ll give a different point of view. It’s your money, no one else’s. It’s your marriage, no one else’s. It’s your jewelry, no one else’s.
I have an upgrade. My husband gave me original when we got engaged. They were cheap because we were broke highschool students and he promised he’d upgrade when we had been married 10 years. I never insisted. I was perfectly happy with my original, but he wasn’t. So for our 10th anniversary, he bought me a set. We didn’t spend an insane amount, we spent less than $2K on a ring worth almost $4K. It made him happy to give me a ring he was proud of. I appreciate

It’s not bad to upgrade, or redesign, or not wear a ring at all. It’s your and your partners choice.
I once met a man who drove a modest Toyota Corolla, wore beat-up sneakers, and looked like he’d lived the same way for decades. But what really caught my attention was when he casually mentioned he was retired at 45 with more money than he could ever spend. I couldn’t help but ask, “How did you do it?”
He smiled and said, “The secret to saving money is knowing where to look for the waste—and car insurance is one of the easiest places to start.”

He then walked me through a few strategies that I’d never thought of before. Here’s what I learned:
1. Make insurance companies fight for your business
Most people just stick with the same insurer year after year, but that’s what the companies are counting on. This guy used tools like Coverage.com to compare rates every time his policy came up for renewal. It only took him a few minutes, and he said he’d saved hundreds each year by letting insurers compete for his business.
Click here to try Coverage.com and see how much you could save today.
2. Take advantage of safe driver programs
He mentioned that some companies reward good drivers with significant discounts. By signing up for a program that tracked his driving habits for just a month, he qualified for a lower rate. “It’s like a test where you already know the answers,” he joked.
You can find a list of insurance companies offering safe driver discounts here and start saving on your next policy.
3. Bundle your policies
He bundled his auto insurance with his home insurance and saved big. “Most companies will give you a discount if you combine your policies with them. It’s easy money,” he explained. If you haven’t bundled yet, ask your insurer what discounts they offer—or look for new ones that do.
4. Drop coverage you don’t need
He also emphasized reassessing coverage every year. If your car isn’t worth much anymore, it might be time to drop collision or comprehensive coverage. “You shouldn’t be paying more to insure the car than it’s worth,” he said.
5. Look for hidden fees or overpriced add-ons
One of his final tips was to avoid extras like roadside assistance, which can often be purchased elsewhere for less. “It’s those little fees you don’t think about that add up,” he warned.
The Secret? Stop Overpaying
The real “secret” isn’t about cutting corners—it’s about being proactive. Car insurance companies are counting on you to stay complacent, but with tools like Coverage.com and a little effort, you can make sure you’re only paying for what you need—and saving hundreds in the process.
If you’re ready to start saving, take a moment to:
- Compare rates now on Coverage.com
- Check if you qualify for safe driver discounts
- Reevaluate your coverage today
Saving money on auto insurance doesn’t have to be complicated—you just have to know where to look. If you'd like to support my work, feel free to use the links in this post—they help me continue creating valuable content.
Do people do this? I have never heard anyone in the UK replace their wedding ring as an “upgrade”. It does occasionally happen that a ring is lost or has to be cut off for example, and that’s different, but otherwise? The ring was given to you during the ceremony. To me, that is the wedding ring, and a replacement just would not cut it, especially if it was replaced simply because my husband fancied giving me a new one. Rings that have all of the grain running in one direction will fail. It’s only a matter of when something hits it at the right angle to crack it.
“Good” wooden rings are made from thin veneers that are steam bent, glued, and wrapped around a mandrel very tightly. These can last a long time. What eventually kills them is when the finish wears. If it’s just oiled, soap will break down the oil. For varnish, touching and rubbing will wear off the finish. The end result is the same; it allows the wood to start soaking up water. The best one I ever made was in ebony with a brass inlay with a vacuum resin infusion. This made it extremely water resistant, even after it started to wear. It still looked new after more than a year of daily wear before I gave it away.

“This is the key to healthy aging,” says Norris. “I’m living proof.”
Now, Chuck Norris has put the entire method into a 15-minute video that explains the 3 “Internal Enemies” that can wreck our health as we age, and the simple ways to help combat them, using foods and herbs you may even have at home.
I’ve included the Chuck Norris video here so you can give it a shot.

I want to take the ring off in the summer for cleaning and to protect it at times, and I don’t want it to get stuck on my finger.
I like a separate wedding ring from the engagement ring. That way I can take the engagement ring off when doing nasty cleaning or other chores with my hands. The stones in the engagement ring need to be protected from damage and from dirt/dust.
I also have other rings that I like to wear instead of my engagement ring (along with the wedding band) and it’s fun to leave the engagement ring at home and wear a ring that has a little bling or a different color stone/design with the wedding band, rather than the engagement ring. When you have been married for long time, that becomes appealing—although I would not remove my band unless I had to.
When traveling—I wear a fake engagement ring and sometimes a less expensive version of my wedding band so that if I got robbed or held up, what I am giving up is no big deal. Check ebay for good, look-alike jewelry to wear in big cities or overseas. You never know.
I like a thick band, that will not lose its shape or get dented as the years go on. A thin (in thickness) wedding band can wear down and lose its round shape, or even develop a crack. A thin ring can also develop edge...
Why do some married men not wear wedding rings?
My husband owned a beauty salon. He was always afraid that his wedding band would slip off his finger during a shampoo and fall down the drain. The ring stayed in his night table drawer during the forty-one years of our marriage and his hairdressing career. It remains there, now that he is gone.
Comparing the three popular options, there are pro's and con's to most metal types.

Gold
Alloys such as 18ct Gold are popular, especially in the UK as they are hard wearing, with many pro's to this type of metal. Many alloys of white gold require Rhodium plating following the final polish to provide the white appearance, which can wear over time. Often mistaken for tarnishing, this is easily re-applied but certainly one of the con's for choosing white gold, amongst many people.
Palladium
Many reference this as a new metal, but it has been around for many years. In the UK Palladium now has a recognised legally required hallmark, and can be purchased in alloys of 950 Palladium and 500 Palladium. 950 Palladium is 95% pure and exhibits many of the properties that Platinum does. Purity, natural white colouration, hypo-allergenic. One of the con's has to be working this metal. Unlike Platinum, Palladium becomes very brittle when heated, making it more difficult to mount onto settings, or re-join following sizing work. Many Palladium rings are mounted using Platinum solder and sized this way. Whilst such work can be done, there is no doubt that Platinum remains advantageous in this context. Fine detail tends to lack the same strength as Platinum, so we tend to advise on stronger settings, such as bar settings and heavier claws for this metal.
The following chart can be helpful to demonstrate various properties across some of these metals.

In engineering terms, scratch resistance translates as abrasion resistance. This usually means that the surface is hard.
Hardness is usually defined as resistance to indentation or abrasion. When I was in school, we usually used Rockwell hardness test. While it wasn’t perfect, it was an easy way to get a quantitative result. But it required the use of different loads or indenters which meant it was sometimes a matter of comparing apples and oranges.

A heat treatable stainless steel can be hard enough to resist scratches. But that not true of a stainless steel. I have two watch bracelets made of stainless) that I have managed to scratch up more than a bit.

Mine is a constant memory of a wonderful day. The day I married the finest man in the world. Even if it had only cost £1, I would never change it.
I like and suggest titanium for wedding bangs, especially for men. Half the weight and twice the strength of steel. Titanium is used to build space shuttles so it should also be able to withstand a marriage ceremony.
The material is lightweight, comfortable, and less sweaty under the band on hot days. Here is an incredibly practical titanium wedding band well worth the price and symbolic of the work, resourcefulness, and creativity that must go into a successful marriage: http://www.gizmag.com/titanium-utility-ring/26025/pictures

I had lost a lot of weight and accidentally lost my prior ring when it fell off.
If you both like titanium wedding rings, then they’re a good choice. Titanium can be colorfully anodized, too.
Titanium is harder than gold, but don’t expect wonders from it - Hollywood has turned titanium into a beast that it’s not. It is quite a bit more affordable than gold.

The main advantages are: It is extremely stiff (rigid) and lightweight. It attracts looks and opens up dialogues. My wife can use it to demonstrate what I do for a living. And for those people who are not as lucky as me to have a wife who is actually happy that I proposed with a ring "made of the same material as F1 cars"; it has more Carbon atoms than a diamond (may win an argument and save you $$ on diamonds)

Jewelry alloys are designed to be scratch resistant but then a gold ring is desirably pure which is very soft and will scratch. A similar situation is with silver. Platinum is harder and will scratch less.
Again, the questioner expects the world wide Quora reader to be able to read his mind as to what type of ring is of interest.

Since the the top three precious ones have been discussed, as well as titanium, I'll touch on three remaining alternative materials: tungsten, stainless steel, and ceramic. All of which are affordable alternatives.
Tungsten, with the help of carbon and other metals, makes a tough, hardy and scratch-free wedding band. Despite the industrial-sounding name, a tungsten / tungsten carbide band can be refined, to possess a long-lasting high polish.
Stainless steel has gained popularity because of its silvery-white appearance, causing it to simulate a platinum piece. A matte or hammered finish makes it

Stainless steel has gained popularity because of its silvery-white appearance, causing it to simulate a platinum piece. A matte or hammered finish makes it appear more ornamental and less like the everyday metal we identify it as. You won't get any green stains from this one. :)
Ceramic wedding bands usually come in black. They are sleek, shiny, and scratch free. Note that these rings are not as brittle as their pottery counterparts. They are also not as heavy. In fact, they are very, very light.
Of course you can resize. All you got to do is talk to the people where the ring came from. The question is: do you need a bigger or smaller ring? That'll determine the cost to resize the ring.
Generally, if you're too loose, loose is better. You can do more of resizing vs too tight. My late wife lost her engagement ring at work and it went right into a customer's bag. All I had to do was order ano

Wedding rings are far from dead. They still exist and are used a lot to signify the sacred union of marriage. But yes, there are many alternatives nowadays. The newest ones are matching couples necklaces and wedding tattoos.
Nothing beats the traditional wedding band though.
They don’t get scratched. They develop a patina over time. Oh yes, it’s the same thing, but having a patina is a slightly more romantic way to put it.
I have a beautiful alexandrite engagement ring, with a wedding band comprised of celtic knits, my new husband's makers mark, 2 different color garnets (red for my husband, purple for my son), and an alexandrite for me.

There is a problem with the question: it assumes all stainless steels are scratch resistant. They are not. Scratch resistance or hardness of the surface depends on alloys of the stainless steels, and whether they are case or through hardened. For any alloy to be hardened it has to be heat treated and then quenched (oil, sand, ice, CO2 ice) Heat treating allows the molecules to be manipulated easily, when you quenched the material molecules align, squeeze together and form a hard surface, thus an envelope which is called case hardening. Your cars rotors are case hardened to prevent to wear out

When choosing a men’s wedding ring, you should also be mindful of the finish, i.e. the texture, aesthetic, and profile of the ring itself. Here’s a breakdown of some different profiles:
- Classic Court – Arguably the most common ring shape, a classic court is round inside and out.
- D-Shape Ring – The outside is round and thin, while the inside is flat, offering a closer fit.
- Flat Ring – Comfortable to wear, but prone to getting stuck on clothing or machinery, the flat ring is true to its name, meaning it’s flat inside and out.

You also want to be mindful of the finish, or polish. Here are some different styles:
- High Polish – The most common type, a high polish delivers straight metal with a smooth, glimmering finish.
- Matte – Popular among modern grooms, the matte cuts down on the finish for less reflection.
- Combination – This one falls directly between a high polish and matte finish.
- Hammered – For those seeking true distinction, the hammered finish looks as though every detail was pounded in, resulting in far more texture.
Since young gents definitely like to think outside the box these days, more and more of them are also looking for rings with detailing, meaning the inclusion of patterns or different materials.

They are a cheap metal ring . They are also a hard metal . So if you work in a hard manual labor world and still want to wear your wedding ring then titanium could be a good choice for you . Platinum is the best metal for a wedding ring as it harder than gold and it looks a bit colder than gold but you can tell it’s platinum even from a distance , nothing else looks like it . And it is a good choice for a wedding ring .
