Why do Western Europeans not bat an eye when people say they're half-[insert ethnicity] based on one of their parents' backgrounds but mock Americans who identify with their ancestral nations?

  • Someone in Britain says “I’m half Irish”, they’re a direct descendent of someone from Ireland so it counts.
  • An American says it and the nearest person to even learn to spell “Dublin” is 200 generations ago meaning it doesn’t count.
