Go to the paintball store. Set your glasses in the goggle first, put it on and then breath hard. Get the masks that fog up the least. Also insure your glasses fit in the mask and rest properly in relation to your face and eyes.

This is my opinion on what I think it the best paintball gear for a kid. I’m assuming kid is from 7/8–15, meaning a durable gear is needed for any accidents like dropping, smashing it against a wall, or any other accidents the gear may encounter.

Gun: The first gun recieved should not be an expensive gun. It should a gun that covers the basics and is a tank, the gun I first started out with was the Tillman 98, this thing just will not break for me. It shoots straight and at a consistent FPS for me all game, and has decent accuracy, isnt too heavy at 3 lbs (no tank, maybe around 5–6 with tank and paint). The good thing about this gun is a large amount of fields will have these as rentals because they are near impossible to break, this means you can test it out and get a feel for the gun without buying it, this also means if you choose to get this gun, all ships should be willing to work on it, and should supply accessories and parts for this gun.

If this gun isn’t the child’s right fit, too heavy, or just doesn’t look good, you could always go for the little bit more expensive, but lighter, smaller and sleeker design of the Empire mini gs marker, these retail for about $300, but are easier and better suited for someone who wants to get into speedsball.

Harness: I’m going to be honest here, no matter what harness you buy it’s going to be awkward for them to move around with it, and reload with it, so I’d get a kid a simple, basic Valken paintball harness fate, which holds 7 pods ands works well for a basic harness, all this is going to do is get them the feel for it and when they’re ready, be able to invest in a more “pro” (basically a more expensive one) harness such as the planet eclipse g rain harness - fire ( ooooo more fancy with colors!, although it does go with team colors)

Pods: whatever you do, don’t buy the most expensive pods, buy the ones that you feel would be best, you could go with the push button ones, but I would suggest using the simply locking lid because I don’t really expect a kid to be on the front, trying to reload in under 3 seconds while continuously shooting like the pros. The color doesn’t matter but I always prefer to go for a smoke looking one, so I can see when the pod is empty, the round size I would suggest is 160 this allows the kid to shoot some ammo to get a feel for the gun. Tip: if on a walk on speedsball field, I always take some form of tape and wrap a ring around so I can easily identify my pods, this stops confusion, and then damn pod thieves (you will run into them eventually)

Mask: at this point it is all on the personality of the child, but get something that cover maybe 2 inches under their chin and covers their ears as well. Pick this wisely. As this covers your kids face, I would reccomend asking people at your field for advice, me personally, I use the Dye I5’s that are whit and gold that came with another lense, this is because my team colors are white and gold, you cannot fog these masks, and they just look good. Don’t worry about your kid having the hottest gear out there, they will break it. I went through 3 masks in the first 4 months of me playing. ( NOT because a paintball went through the lense)

That’s really all, just wear jeans, sneakers, two sweatshirts, gloves and that’s really all, don’t spend $1000 on a gun for someone who never played before.

They will break stuff, get bruises scrapes, and cuts, and may be a little afraid to get hit, but that’s all in the first few games, once they get used to it and are set, meaning you know they’re not going to come running off the field and never play again, that’s when you get them more pricey gear, because no one likes to waste money.

I have played with a mesh mask before, and there is good and bad -

Good:

No lens fog

No need to smudge little specks off of your mask

Seem to be a bit lighter and less prone to falling off your face.

Bad:

Not very fun to get shot in the eyes - recommend safety glasses underneath, but that kind of undermines a lot of the good things.

While not as big of a deal to clean immediately in-game, a pain to clean later with paint stuck in the mesh.

Slightly obscured vision when focusing out the mesh (not too bad)

Now, the question was not if it was a good idea, but rather how to do it, so I'll get on to that. Just thought that stuff should be considered.

If I was going to do it, I would take one of my old masks I don't much care for, perhaps one that has a broken visor already, and remove the visor.

Finding the appropriate mesh would probably be the tough part. If you could pick up some aluminum (not fiberglass) window screen at a home supply store, that oughtta do the trick. I'd recommend either getting black, or spray painting it black so your eyes can focus it out more easily. Possibly even a dark green if you will be playing in woods/grass primarily. If your old visor fit into a slot, try to cut the screen (with tin snips) so it will slip into the same slot, thereby securing it well, and covering the sharp ends. Otherwise, just cut it to fit. I would then use some form of strong 2 part epoxy like JB minute weld (clear, comes in a syringe) to further secure it in place.

After that, I'd think you are pretty much done.

Over the long term you will do real damage to your lungs, which is permanent. So if you are spraying paint, PROTECT yourself. I use one made by deVilbiss, and they are great.
