I was on a jury for a case that was expected to last 6 months. It only lasted 4, but that's not an answer to your question.

I was in a union job and our contract included a provision for this. I had to give my jury pay minus the mileage reimbursement to my employer and they payed my normal salary. We need more union work.

I worked in a position where we had federal and state environmental regulations to comply with. Since I was the only person who did my job, I came in some evenings to get the bare minimum monitoring and reporting done. This was in addition to the days court wasn't in session. The day I was empaneled, an employee in a related job put in his notice, as I was the backup for him, I worked 8 hours over the weekend every 3 weeks in the lab.

Between my work that needed to be done and the coverage I did while they hired and trained a new lab tech, I worked 20-30 hours of overtime a week for those 4 months. So I essentially doubled my pay for those 4 months. It went straight into savings and was the down payment for my house when I moved out of the Bay Area 6 months later.
