It all depends on what you mean by enlightenment!. If not Buddha like life style, one should at lest follow some minimum ethics and restraint. Or else such an enlightenment can be harmful ;-) We see many around, who exploit gullible people, claiming that they are enlightened!
Decades ago, I remember reading a book “An autobiography of an irrational man called …”. In that book the author who lived an almost wayward life (as he himself admits) , claimed that he got enlightened all of a sudden!
Even if he did, I think that is going to set bad model to others who are vulnerable and chances of their going astray is quite likely.
So, as Krishna says in Bhagavad Gita, it is the responsibility of an enlightened person not to mislead others and set a right model.
“(An enlightened person) should not create confusion among lay people. He should keep acting with a balanced mind. Not only that, he has to motivate others to perform their duties by setting a role model.
na budhdhibhEdham janayEth ajnyaanaam karmasanginaam
jOshayEth sarva karmaaNi vidhvaan yukthah samaacharan”
-- Bhagavad Geetha 3.25-26
The reason is
“Lay people often follow great role models. They just mimic the actions of their leaders. So, the actions of the leaders should set an example for others.
