My impression about ancient Buddhist practices is

  • Monks are supposed to live on alms - food once a day and may be a pair of garments a year. And no other possessions.

Monks accepting alms in Burma (Myanmar)

  • Once they have eaten their daily meal, they are supposed to clean their alms bowl and keep them empty till the next day - no saving of food even.
  • They are supposed to live in community housings which are generally natural or man made caves.

Ajanta caves dating from the second century BCE to about 480 CE in the Aurangabad district of Maharashtra state in India

So, where is question of making money? What for?

I don’t know about modern Buddhist monks.
