- Muhammad believed in a creator God namely Allah. Fear of that God is used by Muhammad to discipline humanity. Buddha was skeptical of any such God. He believed in preaching the futility of leading a wayward life - not because of fear of any God but just because it is not the right thing to do and has bad consequences.
- Muhammad’s aim was to finally reach heaven after death. Buddha was for liberation from the cycle of births and deaths and an end to all human suffering.
- Muhammad claimed God’s words as the authority for whatever he preached. He warned of God’s wrath if someone violates whatever is said. Buddha never claimed any authority, not even the ancient scriptures. He used logic and reasoning and deep insights, to support whatever he said. He even asked his followers not to accept them blindly, but verify using their own reasoning and convince themselves before accepting them.
- Muhammad willingly or unwillingly fought wars to either spread or defend his faith. Buddha never bothered to force his views on any one. Nor he was worried about anyone attacking his faith.
- Muhammad considered it right to retaliate if someone attacks you or your faith. He also claimed Allah’s support for such a stand. Buddha preached passive response to even an enemy who attacks. He believed in transforming the mind of the aggressor rather than eliminating him. He did that in the case of Ajathashatru, Angulimala and so on.
