Truck drivers, cab/auto drivers, security guards, train and bus operators earn more than white collared job holders. All the above-mentioned occupations are considered with dignity and no one is made to feel inferior. Well, it’d be pretty simple.

I wanted to use a South American tribe, but none of the images I want to use will pass Quora’s censorship for nudity.

So, is the famous Maasai tribe. There are over 1.5 million Maasai, spread over at least two countries.

Without getting into the politics of it, their capital is severely limited compared to modern Western standards. It is, effectively, a tribal existence (at least, idealized as so). This doesn’t mean life is bad or their society is worse. It just means they have less capital.

Again, now, there are almost 1.6 million Maasai.

Imagine now whether the Maasai can produce at scale:

  • Steel
  • Aluminum
  • Plastics
  • Ceramics
  • Semiconductors
  • Vehicles
  • Hydrocarbon fuels
  • Internal combustion engines
  • Water filtration systems
  • Antibiotics
  • Refrigerators
  • Cellular telephones
  • Communications networks
  • Software
  • Movies

Throw all the labor of the Maasai at these production activities, and they can never produce these items.

The more complex production, the more capital—tools and equipment—you need.

Comparing (or aggregating) perceptions of value (preference, importance, etc.) across persons is quite difficult. (Some would say it is impossible.) It is especially difficult to interpret when we’re discussing one person’s body, property or rights, compared to that of another person.

So, when you ask which is more important, capital or labor, you really need to ask, “according to whom?” Whose perception of value are we giving significance here? The head of a labor union? The head of a chamber of commerce? And, for whomever you select, why should their perceptions of value be of interest to anyone else? In particular why should they weigh more heavily than my own?

As with many similar questions, the meta-question “Whose opinion counts?” is the more important one.

Another way to look at it is in terms of recipes. If you are making a chocolate cake, you know you need ingredients like flour, eggs, chocolate, milk, salt, etc., in a certain, specific ratio. Having that quarter of a teaspoon of salt is just as necessary as having the 8oz of chocolate, because without both, you cannot make your cake. In a scenario like that, it is not really a question of what is more “important.” Without alternatives these ingredients, which can be assembled in only one way, are all equally necessary. There is no relative importance here.

However, imagine you have a larger cookbook, with more than one recipe. Some recipes require eggs, some don’t. Some require cream, but not milk. Some have strawberry jam rather than chocolate. And so on. At that point you might be able to talk about which ingredients are more important, in the sense of which ones are needed most-often to make the recipes that you like. But this still boils down to your personal value scale, of what you like and don’t like. A person who detests flour-less cakes will think flour is more important than a person who is gluten intolerant and cannot eat flour.

I’d look at capital and labor (and other factors of production) in a similar way. What are the recipes (plans for production) you are most interested in? Do these lean more to labor-heavy or capital-heavy? There are usually many ways of producing something, from 100% manual labor to 100% automation. Which recipe you prefer will probably hinge on questions of up front costs, risks, profit potential, etc.

Housing keeps us protected from the elements and allows us to sleep safely as well as keeping out heat and the cold. This is especially useful in snowy climates and regions with predators like lions, tigers, bears, or climates with poisonous spiders and snakes. Builders, Carpenters, Electricians, Plumbers, Plasterers, Tilers, Roofers, and tradespeople build houses.

Timber yards, and iron foundries and brickyards, as well as shops which sell them allow for houses to be built, by selling the products and tools to make houses.

The question is bedevilled by the ambiguity of the term labour? When the inquirer asks the question, he could be having labour as a productive act in mind. But she could also be having workers in mind. How one answers the question depends on the reference point – is it the productive act, or is it workers? Since the inquirer has not qualified his question, we must try and answer both.

Say she had the productive act in mind. Then we should say life is precarious or even impossible without it. The productive act starts with procreation and must be maintained throughout life. In this sense, therefore, labour is important because it brings us forth and then sustains us. Without labour in this sense, none of the things we enjoy (or don’t enjoy) in life would be possible. Labour is a condition of life – without labour, there is no life.

But what if the inquirer had workers in mind? Then his question would be very complex. We might have to ask: important, for whom? Important, for what? Both questions would come with a heavy ideological baggage; they go to the nub of social organisation. And because of that, it would be hard to find an answer which is acceptable to everyone. In venturing an opinion, I have no plan to keep everyone happy.

For the person who employs another, labour – read worker – is important to the extent that it renders the service contracted for. It must deliver the “goods” envisaged in the terms of agreement. The second question (important for what?) is partly answered by what we have said already in this paragraph.

But there is a different sense in which that question might be asked. In asking it, we might be trying to understand why labour is so important that just about everyone talks about it. Why is labour so important that it is necessary to have laws in respect of it?

My take is that the first thing to appreciate is that it is not quite normal that one person should work for another. If we had the choice, my hypothesis is that we would prefer to work for ourselves. We would prefer to determine for ourselves the tempo at which we work, rather than have someone else determine it for us. The importance we attach to labour, so seen, is in my view a recognition of the fact that an employment relationship is not quite normal (it is a relationship of subordination) and therefore it has to be regulated.

The other reason I think we attach such importance to labour is that the memory of slavery is still very much with us. In attaching great importance to labour, we affirm human freedom in the context of an employment relationship. For this reason, we are not happy to leave the employment relationship simply as a contractual matter – we want to ensure that employment contracts do not sink below minimum human standards or conditions.

Therefore, the question is you that if you like it and choose it for yourself, will you not choose it for employees or labors.
Ironically, Infrastructure and construction industry has to work in places where there is no infrastructure for them to operate in. Sometimes in the hot desert of Rajasthan, sometimes in the chilly cold weather of Himachal, sometimes it is the unpredictably monsoon of Meghalaya and sometimes it is the extremely dry weather of Maharashtra. What if I told you that with the use of prefabricated labour hutments you could shield your employees and labour from the harsh weather and continue your work normally, Wouldn’t that be great? Modern temporary labor hutments use insulated sandwich panels that insulate the structure. In addition, they are reusable, can be used at various locations according to work, sustainable and most importantly cost effective. Prefabricated labor hutments also increase the efficiency of the workers as they provide a better work environment and necessary technological possibilities to complete the work.
Modern day businesses use prefabricated structures for labor hutments, site offices, Porta cabins, workers accommodation and even staff accommodation. They can be moved easily from one place to another; they are also made of ecofriendly material and can be quickly available. Sizes are also flexible and customized according to need and their reusability helps in reducing the overall cost of a project. Because of this, businesses use prefabricated structures to even construct labor colonies. In addition, solar panels can be installed on rooftops to gain easy accessibility to energy for work.
According to a report labor, efficiency improves by 10% if the environment provided for stay is good. Another report cites that insulated labour hutments help labors to overcome homesickness and increase their concentration on work. Hence, it is a no brainer to understand why labor hutment is so important for your business!
In the end, we believe that labor hutments is the key to success of any project of construction and infrastructure and hence we are dedicated to help you achieve success by providing low cost, sustainable and highly appreciable prefabricated labor hutments and other structures!

Even manufacturing jobs are being replaced by automation. As time goes on, labor gets further and further removed from production. Some believe that automation will eventually take everyone’s job. I’m skeptical of this happening but if it does, it will completely remove labor from the equation.

Labor is part of production but the other part is capital, goods which are used to produce goods and services rather than to be consumed.

The working poor are less likely to be covered by health insurance by their employers. Only 18% of the working poor are covered by health insurance available through their employer or their union, compared to 55% of all workers. Most likely, the jobs these workers hold are less likely to offer health insurance.

Although many of the labor qualify for food stamp benefits, few receive them. Of those who qualify for these benefits, two-thirds do not receive them. It is unclear why the working poor do not receive these benefits, but lack of need does not seem to be the reason. Qualitative research suggests that the working poor do not know that they qualify for these benefits.

He says that he will always stand by his principles and never seems to waver. Some people might think that is a good thing but in fact, it’s what divides a nation. Your leader needs to bring the opposition into discussion, otherwise it’s them and us. The US is right in the middle of this now. We need to make sure that we move forward as a country. The way in the past has been through discussion and consensus. I know we’ve had a number of things thrust upon us that we don’t like, depending on our own persuasions, however in general we come out okay. We can’t do that with a “my way or the high way” mentality.

As for Brexit, I find Labours stance completely crazy. I want to remain and would normally follow the lines of the Labour Party, but I have no real idea where the Labour Party really stands. So for that reason I will likely vote Lib Dems.

I think people of left or right leanings have the right to expect that they know where they’re party stands on major issues. Unfortunately we life in interesting times. An awful lot of conservatives want to remain but a small cadre has made leaving a money earner for themselves and their already rich friends. And on the other hand we have a Labour leader who is trying (not very hard) to convince people to vote for him to remain when he ultimately wants to leave.

I’m so pleased that these politicians aren’t just in it for the money and have our interests at heart, otherwise one could become a bit of a cynic.

If you look at my credentials above, I did get a degree in Vocational Education and my primary role to teach it, I had to be credentialed so the courses I have taken pertained to prepare me for the credential. Anytime, you teach in a public school system; anywhere from elementary to high school, a credential is required by the State. Don’t forget that is where the school gets it’s funding for each student per year. You also have to pass an examination of at least 70% (that might have been changed since I graduated) that you have the necessary skills to teach, preparing to teach, knowing how to develop a lesson plan, skills in how to develop tests for students, grading and some basic statistical analysis, to name a few. Added to that you take courses in many aspects of the type of students that you will teach. Special needs learners, different cultures, value of teaching in the United States compared to many other countries also called work ethic system. listening to speakers in specialty fields, a deep sense in learning how to teach a class in front of all your peers in class and other classes as well as teachers and even supervisors because that is what you are going to do, learn to develop a philosophy of teaching, much needed when you are looking for work in a teaching field, or at least defining it. That was the hardest part to explain as you need years to develop that philosophy. The most important point is coming across with a logical answer, class psychology and how to handle a class; especially high school, and above all how to spend your first 30 minutes in front of new students. This is so crucial that your students are watching what type of teacher you will be. It was a scary moment for me, as you can hear a pin drop. This will be the only time you will get a full sense of student cooperation. You pass that, you become so relieved and happy that you did the best you could. You will also get the respect that is needed in most cases. Before I go on, I just want to say at the very beginning when I was first introduced into the electronic field regarding a union job, I was an apprentice and had to complete two years of training at night, 2 times per week to learn basic electricity and electronics. All I did was to wire speakers in ceilings, putting in loads and loads of connectors in hospitals in each room, pulling wire, etc. So, in essence, you really never learned what the theory was in school. It was a like going to just a bull session where everyone learned absolutely nothing! You would learn when you were on the job training. Being an apprentice is like yes sir, what ever you want, sir, kiss my ass sir. Getting $1.25 hr and having to crawl under buildings seeing black widow spiders everywhere and eyes of rats looking at you, makes you think twice. Do you honestly think that the journeyman would do these things? HELL, NO!

To get back to the original question. Here is a definition of Vocational Education. Vocational education is education that prepares people to work in various jobs, such as a trade, a craft, or as a technician. Vocational education is sometimes referred to as career education or technical education.]

A vocational school is a type of educational institution specifically designed to provide vocational education.

Vocational education can take place at the post-secondary, further education, and higher education level; and can interact with the apprenticeship system. At the post-secondary level, vocational education is often provided by highly specialized trade, Technical schools, community colleges, colleges of further education UK, universities, Institutes of technology / Polytechnic Institutes.

Until recently, almost all vocational education took place in the classroom, or on the job site, with students learning trade skills and trade theory from accredited professors or established professionals. However, online vocational education has grown in popularity, and made it easier than ever for students to learn various trade skills and soft skills from established professionals in the industry.

There are so many other definitions but all mean the same. When I came out of the Air Force, I immediately enrolled in a technical school learning electronics. I graduated with an AS degree in Electronic Technology. I wanted to be an Electronic Technician. That is a vocation. Over the years I went into specialty fields like new product development or electronic engineering technician which means working with an electronics engineer. They would do the design, I would do the actual wiring of circuitry, test according to what the engineer requires, build special jigs or test equipment to do the testing and generally the engineer writes up all the reports from your data. As time goes by, and get better at in developing, you can generally do many of the things yourself. Ultimately, the engineer has to sign off for the company to proceed. That is the engineers function. I have also been involved in field service work such as taking care of customers products. I was involved in taking care of hard disk drives (the old fashion kind with huge 10-layer disks which had 20 heads to align and keep the customer happy. Now, to put that to use, I wanted to teach but that was the only thing I could teach is electronics or basic electronics. This is where Vocational Education comes into play. Simply put, you take what you have learned and then teach it.

So, think of it this way. If you were going to be an Electronics Engineer, the courses you take are academic. Meaning lots of math including Calculus and above. I consider this white collar career. Of course the pay is pretty well substantial. Vocation falls more or less into a blue collar type of job. I hate to call it that because it is lower on the totem pole. But, somebody has got to rebuild America and many of these workers are needed. I know I went on and on with this but I thought I had to explain it further.

Honestly speaking, giving labor isn’t as “hard” as it’s “dangerous”. “Hard” is generally associated with the degree of effort required to achieve; but whether something is “hard” is almost always a subjective assessment. With this stated, it’s worth noting that giving labor could be considered dangerous in every sense regardless of who’s doing so.

Giving labor comes with inherent risks for both mother and baby. Contrary to popular belief, giving labor could ideally be categorized as “complicated” due to the broad number of variables that CAN contribute to labor resulting in the death of mother

Vocational training is generally in a high school, 2 year college, or post high school technical school. Instead of pushing a wheelbarrow the student is trained to work at a higher level such as a mason or carpenter. Not easy skills that can be duplicated by observation. Auto mechanics is a good example. Cars have gotten very sophisticated, and require in depth training and on-going training. Just to change the oil might not require vocational training, but beyond that it does. There are exceptional people that can pick up skills on their own, but that is the exception. Vocational training is there for the large majority of individuals that want skills that can get them beyond simple entry level jobs requiring just a high school diploma.

This can lead to increased precarity for workers, as they may have fewer job protections and benefits, and may experience more instability in their employment.

Precarious labor can also include jobs that are low-paid, lack benefits such as health insurance or retirement plans, and have little job security, which means workers are at risk of being laid off or having their hours reduced without warning. In addition, precarious workers may also lack access to training and development opportunities, and may have limited ability to negotiate terms of their employment.

Casualization of labor is a trend that has been observed in many countries and industries. It is driven by various factors, such as technological changes, increased global competition, and changes in labor laws and regulations. Employers may choose to hire casual workers to reduce their costs, or to increase their flexibility in responding to changes in demand for their products or services.

However, casualization of labor can have negative consequences for workers, as it can lead to increased precarity in their employment. Casual workers may have fewer job protections, and may be more vulnerable to unemployment, underemployment, and poverty. Furthermore, precarious work can also have negative impacts on workers' mental and physical health.

McDonald’s pushed technology to get the maximum productivity out of those with the least human capital (training, general knowledge). When It could not increase labor productivity with capital, it got creative. It convinced us we were lucky to be able to fill our own drinks. CVS is doing the same now with self service registers to extent that they will not ring you up in person.

(It should be noted that you can look at both these and most other examples as (1) capital making the remaining labor more productive, or you can see (2) the capital/technology replacing a sub-set of labor. I see the second because if remaining labor then you have to see the amount of work divided by the amount of labor equal per person and no reason to pay one any more than others- in other words communism. Who wants to argue for communism?)

You can increase labor productivity by applying capital directly to the labor (training the person for more difficult work rather than lowering the difficulty of the work). The problem is that you don’t control the capital any more at that point (unless slavery or chattal or similar). Thus industry is so reliant on the expenditures of government for training their labor. Like roads, electrical grid, sewer, and everything else that makes industry work in this country they have an incentive to deny their reliance upon it (let me know if you don’t see this and I’ll draw you a picture) which pushes them toward the rhetoric of Republicans and actions of Democrats.

I saw someone talking about tax rates. If your only tool is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail, doesn’t it. Like all arts, you must be a skilled craftsman before becoming an artist. You must know how to use different tools in different situations. You must know how to use each tool in many, many ways. Only then can your be creative and come up with innovation and new solutions. Otherwise you are just repeating the past, bleeding the patient, burning the witch, richening the upper classes… Being conservative.
