My high school marching band was invited to march in the 1980 Rose Bowl Parade. We were selling candy bars to raise money for the trip. One day, my friend MK and I decided to go door-to-door at her townhouse complex selling our wares.
At one house, when the door opened a cloud of “funny” smelling smoke wafted out. OK, it was weed and I knew exactly what THAT smelled like. The owner had a really long beard and so did his friend.
When they heard we were in marching band, they said “cool, we’re in a band too!” Then we talked about our instruments and music for a few minutes. They thought getting to march in the Rose Bowl Parade was “really cool.”
We only had a couple bars left, but said we had more if they wanted it. He told us “bring it all, we want to see you guys on TV!” and then donated an extra $100.
3 years later, the stoners who bought all our band candy released their top selling album “Eliminator.”
ZZ Top went above and beyond to help us get to the Rose Bowl Parade that year. Nice guys!
