Putin is between the crap and the dark place.

He knew he was screwed really early in the war. He basically put everyone with power and influence in Russia on alert. He took out everyone who questioned him. Once the war ends they who remains will want payback. For those reasons alone Putin's going all the way in the war of attrition.
