They could be having a bad day, I know it's no excuse but I sometimes ask how they are doing if they are combing too hard on my scalp which happens sometimes.
Some of them tell me they don't like one of their coworkers or managers or they didn't have many clients that day or I come off nervous or scared of them so they become mean if they rush you. They don't say that but you can tell if they are rushing so they can leave. I don't think they like their job.
Or sometimes they just don't know how hard they are combing if we don't say anything. Half of the time that's what it is and the other half is not really liking the job, their clients, are not self confident, the manager or a coworker, or having personal problems at home, could be sick, tired out, or where they work. I definitely think it could also be their personality or how rough they just are. Sometimes you have people who are just rough with everything all around and their emotions goes towards what they do, like self soothing. I had a few hairstylists who did get carried away with their emotions to the point of combing too hard, giving me the wrong hair style, or cutting too much off or not listening.
