Years ago, I was a guest at the house of a friend with a precocious six year old daughter. At one point, I was preparing to go out and was putting on makeup. The little girl watched me for awhile and then asked, “why do women put on makeup?”
Trying to be as truthful as possible, I said. “Children and young people are naturally beautiful, but when you get older you find that some of that fresh beauty is gone, so you paint it back on.” She studied me intently a few more minutes and then said “It’s not all gone, you know. Some of it is still there.” Then she walked away.
Six years old!
