Not really. We all appreciate people, regardless of our relationship status. We are living in a free society; we aren’t prohibited from appreciating other people or complimenting them.

Calling someone cute doesn’t necessarily mean you are hitting on them already. And it doesn’t imply that someone is totally hot or something that others might misinterpret. Maybe some would use the compliment strategy to flirt on someone they like. However, there are also people with pure intentions. These are the people who think of you without malice. They just appreciate the way you think or act.

Your friends, colleagues, co-workers and strangers can call you cute and there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s all about shifting the way you interpret compliments and intentions. Just a friendly reminder. :)
