Motorcycling the backroads of France several times took me through many small villages and townships, where a shortish main street in each always had tremendous activity, while outside of a four or five block square they seemed empty.

What AMAZED me was the incredible number of people walking down the street in every small town with a loaf of bread (I now know it is called a baguette) about one meter long, always being carried under their armpit. Only in France… no other place on the planet… Hundreds of people always carrying bread under their armpit looking at their phone, reading the newspaper, or just walking!
