Well a trending video means it has been getting a lot of views and/or likes, when youtubes algorithm notices that this happened it recommends the video to more people, this is because when a video is getting a lot of people to press it then it will make YouTubes traffic higher, in conclusion: YouTube notices that a video is popular so it recommends it so more people can press it.
