The journey did not take 40 years. The Israelites crossed the Sinai Peninsula in short order and then spent 4 decades living in Midian, before the Lord would allow them to enter Canaan. Most people make the erroneous and ridiculous assumption that the Israelites lived in the Sinai Peninsula.
