I've loved being in Germany ever since I've set foot here. There are plenty of things I love about living in Germany which I constantly write about in my answers. However, for a change today I'd like to say what I don't like about living in Germany.

To be clear, this is my personal opinion and I don't intend to impose that these things should change. They are little things that annoy me a little. My first world problems.

TV and Radio broadcast fees

If you don't already know there is a mandatory radio fees in Germany which amounts to 17,50€ a month. The issue is even if you don't own a television or radio you still need to pay the fee.

The fee would still be justified if the broadcast was free of advertisements or have minimal advertisements. Try watching a formula one race on RTL and you'll be annoyed that they put on advertisements at key moments.

EDIT: As many people have pointed out in the comments, RTL is a private broadcaster and not funded by the government. Please ignore the italicized part of the answer. I didn't research it properly. It was my mistake. Thanks to all the readers who pointed that out.

Telecom contracts

Telecom contracts are dreadful. Though it is similar in many other countries, one would expect Germany to fair better at consumer protection.

The termination of telecom contracts, phone and internet are subjected to three month prior notice. Failing to which the contract gets extended for approximately two years for non discounted price.

I don't see any point in having that policy except to rip off the forgetful customer. Moreover, the contract termination process is purposefully made complicated in most cases.

Sunday

As much as I appreciate the work life balance in Germany it sometimes haunts me that on Sundays almost everything is shut.

Things are different in larger cities, but the town I live in, it is really difficult to find a super market open on a Sunday.

I further have put 7 Tips to mentally prepare for studying in Germany for those thinking about pursuing studies in Germany.
