Thanks for the A2A, now I feel more comfortable to share to be honest.
I start by positively saying that I live in Germany over 7 years. It was always my choice to stay here. So apparently there are more things that I like in Germany that the ones that I dislike.
So going back to the original question 😈 here comes the list of the dislikes*:
- Any saying that is not positive is considered as a “complain”. At the start I couldn’t get it - it turned out that in Germany sharing my personal day-to-day difficulties with a friend is complaining. How do I know it? people that I considered friends told me that I complain too much. This is such a huge cultural difference for me (in my country people really like to share these kind of things with each other). And here come the second point…
- Sharing personal issues is usually not welcomed. The German are happy creatures that like to have very light conversations about the weather and vacation. A more deep favorite subject would be the politics (typically not in Germany, but the rest of the world). Talking about personal things, even just mentioning your family members or childhood memories, requires somehow a stronger connection.
- No different opinions. How can I explain this point 🤔? It is just feels like everybody here know the same things, read the same newspaper (depends on their political view/ region), talk about the same things…. Like there are very few “assembly lines” to produce German people. I am a bit exaggerating, of course.
- Hierarchy is sacred. German are afraid of their boss, they will do anything he/she would say, they would stay at the office till he/she would leave. It comes somehow together with the previous point. Saying “no” is not that common. Also disagreeing. German society is not flexible enough to deal with a “rebellious”. It actually does not have to be the boss. It could be the teacher in an online course, the landlord, the more experienced student and so on.
- There is a lot of fakeness. If someone is unhappy with something but he: 1. cannot complain 2. cannot share 3. cannot disagree, then he will just smile and do whatever it was, pretending that everything is okay. You must be very brave here even to look angry.
So here is my share of complaining 😉
Maybe I can come up with more things haha but I am pretty sure these are the main ones. They include many sub-issues that one can imagine by himself.
*Despite of this list, I managed to meet also other people- open, creative, independent, honest. It is just a simple generalization… I hope that I wont insult anyone.
