I remember being shocked by the way parents talked to their children in France. No baby talk and no dumbing down their answers to their children's questions. They spoke to them like any other adult, explaining patiently why they couldn't do this or that. All in all I found French children better well behaved. Though it has now changed a bit, I remember in New York hearing things like 'don't ask so many questions', 'keep quiet', or 'don't ask stupid questions' routinely on the subway when kids where just curious about what they were seeing around them. After my experience in France it depressed me to see kids talked to this way. I've treated my son like an adult since the day he was born and I am very thankful to have seen this other way of talking to your child.
