Houses, that’s what people are used to. We’re not nearly as dense as Europe and a lot of Canadians like a rural lifestyle with a house with lots of space. Most don’t see the appeal of living in Toronto and can’t imagine why people would want to live somewhere where everything you need is within walking distance. The problem is of course houses are becoming more expensive and it is a right of passage for many Canadians, so they feel they have to get a house. It is I think too high an expectation. There are too many people now and building these monster homes and destroying our forests in the process aren’t worth it, especially seeing as you have to drive everywhere anyways. If you want to deal with the housing crisis in T.O. increase density, so people can afford a unit of housing. I grew up in a small semi detached house in Toronto and was quite happy, I don’t know even want a house, least of all a big one. I think some Canadians are beginning to realize that living in an apartment isn’t as bad as people thought and are seeing the perks of a more European lifestyle, but Canadian culture still very much emphasizes a suburban lifestyle and for many it’s a sign of success so people just feel they have to. We need a bit more European influence in our urban planning though
