Diversity is a strength when a dominant group is already in place, otherwise, disaster looms.
In the US where the WASP group is clearly the dominant one ( look at the Democratic Presidential debate), then diversity will not be considered a threat: in the US the minority groups like the Latinos, Indians, Pakistanis, Israelis, Palestinians, Russian, Ukrainians will only contribute to the “diversity” of the US. Likewise in Japan, the Yamato Japnese reigns supreme and the presence of “China town” is seen as a welcome diversity; in Germany, white Germanis clearly controls the political landscape and the dotted Turkish Shish-kebab stands is also a nice cultural diversity, never a threat.
When a dominant group is not so obvious, diversity may cause havoc. like Muslims in India, Shiites in the Suni-Arab’s world, Palestinians in Israel.
Actually, 10% of Chinese are considered to be in the 55 minority groups (non-Han Chinese) so China is not as “homogenous” as people think. It is just that the Han Chinese is the dominant group, and the group is the face of China.
