This is from many years ago. I knew a woman who was a bit of a kleptomaniac. She was just a casual friend, not somebody I had a strong relationship with. One day, I accompanied her on a shopping trip because she wanted a ride, and I was going shopping anyhow. The store had ground beef on sale at a good price. After I drove her back to her home and was helping her put her shopping away, I found out she had four packages of ground beef I had not seen her purchase. She admitted she had shoplifted them, as if it was just a normal thing to do.

I was a bit confused by this, not so much that she stole, but because I knew she was a kleptomaniac, so I asked her why she stole the ground beef instead of the nice steaks or roasts that were right beside the ground beef. Her answer, delivered like it was obvious, was that she was trying to be economical.
