For myself, being a stoic comes down to three core ideas:
- Embracing Joy and Tranquility
- Our time in this world is so limited that one should aim to find the joy and wonder in every activity. Next time you flush the toilet, think about what ingenuity had to occur for someone to create a system that allows you to flush.
- Being happy is often harder than being at peace. If a tragic event occurs in your life, are you going to be happy? Most likely not, which is why tranquility or acceptance of the present moment is a much more worthy goal to aspire to
- Viewing life through the trichotomy of control
- Things you have control over
- Plan and take action with these things.
- Things you have no control over
- Don’t worry about these things, its a waste of mental energy.
- Things you sort of have control over
- Set internal goals with these, if you want to win a marathon don’t set 1st place as your goal - instead focus on things you have control over such as your diet and practice schedule.
- Enduring Hardship
- Nothing is inherently bad or good, its merely you’re thinking that makes it so
- When a difficulty arises, the universe - like a physical trainer, has done this to toughen and strengthen you so you can become an Olympic victor, and enjoy the best life possible
- By enduring hardship and taking on risk, you are immunizing yourself against future events. If you survived difficult event x, you’re likely to survive difficult event y.
