Back in my early twenties, one random day, I just realized after 3 years of friendship that my friend never talked about work, and I then immediately realized he never mentioned anything about going to a job, or working, or bosses, or co-workers, or just anything even remotely work related..ever!
Anxiously - I asked him how he paid his bills. He explained that his “family just has money” and when I asked how they “just have money” he told me that he’s not sure but they have “people who take care of it” and “everybody in his family have been millionaires since they were born”. He went on to say he has “like a few hundred thousand shares spread amongst companies like Johnson & Johnson and Wal-Mart” but he doesn’t pay any attention to it - just checks on his account a couple times a year when he needs to pull out some cash.
This all came from the mouth of my friend who drove a 10yr old Ford Ranger pickup truck with dents and scratches all over. Who complained about the cost of craft beer when “Bud gets it done”. Who wore discounted wal-mart clothing until it fell completely apart. Who would ask you for change to buy a $1 menu item because he “didn’t have any cash” and never had credit cards or even use his debit because he “just doesn’t trust computers” with money.
I mean.. I thought this kid was gonna drop dead one day, starving due to not being able to afford a McChicken, and sure enough he likely had enough money to buy all the McDonalds locations we ever visited.
