They're free. Mostly.

Or before someone who likes to cause a stir rips my head off: It's paid for through taxes.

All the way from primary school through to university you can choose not to pay anything, except what you of course pay through your taxes.

Actually you even get paid to go to school when you're over 18.

Personally I'm at university studying for my degree, and I get a grant from the government each month. This isn't anything that makes me rich, but it's more than most could wish for, and I'm very grateful for it. It means I can live and focus on my degree - without paying anything for it.

You can of course choose to send your children to private schools, which charges fees. Personally I went to one of these for the last 5 years of my time in school.

I don't remember the exact price, but I think it was 1500kr the first 4 years and then 2200kr for the last year, per month.

Believe me though, some private schools will charge you much more. Especially the ones with boarding as an option as well.
