I was born in a January of 1999. My father was born in August of 1947. He's actually a quora user. He got one of my answers in a digest once, actually.
I know quite a few of the other answers talk about how it's sad, but I see it as a blessing. I refuse to take it any other way. He's healthy. 70 years old, and he out does most 45 year Olds around here. I live on a farm in Texas, and the other day him and I loaded and then unloaded exactly 100 square bales of coastal hay that I bought. He didn't take any breaks or anything like that. Each bale is between 40 and 60 pounds. So sure, he's old, but he's healthy, and that makes him seem nice. His health is a blessing.
One of the best results of his age is that he can relate to nearly anything, because he's been there for it all. He rode his motorcycle around the pit that was dug for the construction of the astrodome. His memory is great. It doesn't matter what I'm talking about, he can relate to it, and I love that. Anything I say can and will be answered with “back in 74…” or something to that effect. It's something I love about my dad and my life. I've got friends with younger parents, and I wouldn't trade this for the world. I get to learn so much from him. He's been a pilot, an engineer, an artist, a model builder, a manager, a woodworker, and most importantly to me, a father. My biggest goal in life is to make him proud of me. I think I'm on the road to achieve that. He's worked his whole life to build a better life for me and my whole family. He's a great man, and his age is definitely a huge part of who he is.
Also, it's always fun to have friends talking about how old their parents are and I get to hit them with the old “my dad was born in the 40s.” great fun. Only problem with it is that he looks so young they don't belive me.
So contrary to what others have said, it's great. I love it, and I wouldn't want it any other way. My father's age is a huge opportunity to me. For learning, and for his advice. Can't beat the experiences he's had. Lived around the world. Driven bad cars, good cars, and nice cars. He's done it all, and there is no one I admire more.
