Which site is better out of PeoplePerHour and Upwork is a matter of personal opinion for each freelancer. Personally, I’ve worked through PeoplePerHour for many years, and there are aspects of the site that seemed better to me than Upwork—specifically the ability to sell “hourlies”, meaning you don’t constantly have to apply for jobs as buyers come to you. This saves a lot of time.

When I was originally deciding between the two sites, the thing that really put me off Upwork was being able to see each freelancer’s lifetime earnings on the site, which felt unnecessarily personal. Another reason was that Upwork seemed to be aimed more at the American market, while PeoplePerHour seemed to be aimed at the European market, so it made sense for me to choose the site more geared up for UK sellers.

That said, PeoplePerHour does have its downfalls too. Their fees are relatively high and difficult to figure out. However, the main issue is their appalling customer service options, which they fail to improve despite countless users of the site complaining about the lack of customer support. They don’t offer telephone support or a chat option if you encounter any problems, so the only way to get in touch is via a lengthy email support discussion, which usually takes days and days to resolve.

It may be a matter of balancing the pros and cons of each site to make a decision which to use.
