Having to schlep longer and longer distances to find a grocery store or other shop catering to locals (hardware, housewares, furniture, etc.) is a reality as these shops are closing and being replaced by souvenirs. Same with getting medical care. By now, many of these services are best found not in Venice at all, but the mainland… which ranges from being a mere inconvenience to being an enormous pain in the neck. It’s a city geographically stuck before the Industrial Revolution, and that makes it an awkward city to live in today… and this is compounded by the fact that the city’s government encourages a detrimental flood of tourists without adequate structure to preserve the city’s way of life for the residents.
