“Enlightenment” as it’s usually depicted is illusion.

When we focus our attention on the present moment and rest in this place of fathomless peace, the transformation that occurs is so far-reaching, we can’t easily comprehend its radical nature.

Abiding in the present moment transforms us completely - no wonder we’re apprehensive and want to postpone.

The idea that we’ll be enlightened one day causes us to plant enlightenment in a future moment and pretend we’re preparing ourselves for it.

But everything except abiding in the heart of this moment is a distraction.

Why do we need to prepare?

We’re abiding in this moment, not playing Carnegie Hall.

The procrastination attempts pile up, but the best one is that we’re seeking enlightenment.

I know it bothers some people to hear this and they want me to say, Seeking enlightenment is at least better than chasing external rewards.

If this perspective were correct, I would certainly agree.

But the heart of delusion is believing your real life is elsewhere.

To the extent that spiritual traditions adopt this attitude, they’re deluded.
