I can answer this from my own account and from the account of someone else I knew.
For myself, my family wasn’t poor or anything, but it was the norm for my single dad to work countless hours to put my sister and I through high school. When college rolled around, I took out a loan, which to this day, 4 years after graduation, I’m still working to pay off. To me, saving comes before comfort. If I had to give up living in a nice apartment just to save more for a rainy day, I’d gladly make the trade. My husband, who grew up in a well-off family that too, relied on real estate for their fortune, doesn’t have the same view. He considers life too short to be spent on worrying over finance or to trade comfort for an extra few bucks. Just recently, my husband decided to enroll in a 12,000 Euros online course. His family would finance his education. I’m happy he wants to further his degree, though I was quite baffled at how easily the decision was made. The last time I took money from my family was when I was 16, over 10 years ago, and I’m still paying for my undergrad student loan for God’s sake. That said, he’s a man with good morals and values, and at the end of the day, unless he’s gambling our money away or wasting it on hookers, I think the finance value differences we have isn’t that big of a deal. Besides, I got lucky because we were handed an apartment, which I believe is something most people our age wouldn’t be able to afford on their own in today’s economy. We would’ve otherwise been spending our lives paying for rent or scrambling to save enough for a mortgage down payment.
In a more extreme situation, I knew the wife of one of China’s top 10 wealthiest man. You could probably easily Google him, but for privacy sake, I won’t be naming him. His trophy wife and two kids were residing in Vancouver, BC. This family had money you couldn’t burn through even if you tried. His son got a 20 million dollar mansion for his 9th birthday - and that’s only one of the properties they own throughout North America. Hermes would close it doors when the wife visits and she’d clean out the store, paying and having her purchase delivered to her house. She bought a $550,000 purse out of boredom. All the members of the family had to wear bullet proof vests and had security guards escort them everywhere. It was ridiculous. That said, the husband was never around. He flew between China and Canada, and the kids would probably see him twice a month. The wife, significantly younger than him, was suffering from depression due to loneliness. She couldn’t have friends who weren’t hoping to piggyback off her. She became addicted to plastic surgery to upkeep her appearance and even order a round of hormonal injection for her 12 year old daughter to enhance breasts growth. For someone who knew them from the inside, I can firmly tell you that the family was rotting from within, and the parents were raising non-contributing assholes that will just cause the world pain when they grow older.
