When a human becomes aware of himself beyond the body, the mind, down to the very essence of what he is, the foundation of his being - the awareness, the consciousness - that moment of insight is what I, personally, consider an awakening.
When a human becomes that fundamental awareness, when he no longer is a human mind and body being aware of something, but when it’s awareness being aware of itself as awareness, as the body, as the mind, as life, as reality, as everything that it is: that’s enlightenment.
It is not a “who” that’s enlightened, it is a “what”: awareness. Awareness is enlightenment.
I consider enlightened an awareness that’s aware of itself as a human. Or a tree, or an animal. Or anything.
