If by “view” you meant to say stream pirated movies online then “viewing pirated movies online” is illegal. If you meant that someone downloaded the pirated movie and or streamed the pirated movie and you were merely viewed it, that would also be illegal.

Right now there is a dramatic change in the landscape of pirated movies. Fewer people are downloading pirate movies to their computers via torrents and file lockers. This is largely because there are downsides to downloading like, risks of malware and being caught. Overall the process of downloading pirated movies has become messy compared to streaming pirated movies.

That said. It’s easy to see why downloading a pirated copy of a movie from a pirate website is illegal. During the process of downloading the file you replicated the entire video file and it’s stored on your computer, which you can share with anyone you want.

So why is streaming a pirated movie illegal if there is no file stored on your computer?

Believe it or not your computer is doing the virtually the same file replication that you’d conceptualize when downloading a pirated movie from a torrent site or file locker. The only difference between streaming a pirated movie and downloading a pirated movie is that streaming technologies allow you watch the video file as it is being downloaded.

How does pirated movie streaming technology work?

As you watch a pirate movie stream your computer is actually downloading segments of the full video file every second. As your computer receives these video file segments from the pirates video hosting server it compiles them in order, so you can watch the video. This process of simultaneously downloading new segments of the video while compiling the successfully downloaded segments to watch is called streaming.

After watching the streamed pirated movie your computer will have downloaded a copy of the pirated movie file. The key difference between streaming a pirated movie and downloading a pirated movie is that the streamed pirated movie file doesn’t show up in your downloads folder, so it ‘feels’ less illegal. But it’s still completely illegal.
