1. The nosebleeds and congestion. I have had 2 nosebleeds in my life and they were very brief until I got pregnant. Then my nose was always drippy and I got a lot of random nosebleeds. Apparently the hormones expand your blood vessels so the vessels in your nose are more delicate too, plus the drippy news and voilà. Thank goodness it got better in the 2nd trimester but the nosebleeds persisted throughout my pregnancy. Oh, I’m dripping blood for no good reason again!
  2. The unsolicited birthing stories from the veteran moms around you. I expected unsolicited advice, but shortly after people found out I was pregnant they would pour their stories. Now I know most of the labor stories of the moms around me including how much they tore, breastfeeding problems, etc. I had a long labor myself so I understand that my pregnancy triggered their memories but still, some of these people were acquaintances and now I know something quite intimate about them.
  3. The support from other women. Mom guilt and mommy wars are real. But in my experience there was more supportive women than mommy-war kinda women during the pregnancy. It felt nice, especially during the first trimester when you’re super fatigued and the last trimester when you’re so uncomfortable and a little nervous about labor. People can be kind.
  4. You may not have that gush of unconditional love for the infant right away, especially if you were all drugged up during labor. I loved my child right away and would do anything for him but it was more of a concept and I was in love with the idea of my child. That feeling of falling in love with this specific little person and personality came later for me, when he became more able to show his personality and respond to me (2–3months). The first time he looked for me in a room full of people, then grinned when he locked eyes with me, no words can describe that feeling <3 Don’t worry if you don’t feel it right away, it’s normal and it will come!
